Losing a father at a young age is difficult for a young girl. It's especially challenging growing up as the only daughter of a world-famous entertainer worshiped by fans decades after his death.
This is the challenge that Lisa Marie Presley knew after losing her father when she was only 9-years-old. She addressed her feelings by recording a cover of one of his most famous songs that include both of their voices.
Now a musician herself, Lisa Marie never got to know her father Elvis Presley as an adult. However, something of him remains in every song that he sang. One such song is "In the Ghetto," the lyrics of which tell the story of a poor boy born in the ghettos of Chicago.
Growing up hungry and poor, the kid buys a gun, steals a car, and tries to make a run for it, only to die in the streets just as his own son is born in the ghetto. It is one of Elvis' most iconic songs.
For the 30th anniversary of her father's death, Lisa Marie got to share a special moment by recording this song that he made so famous. In a special twist, she created a video duet with her father, singing this song together.
The resulting footage of their rendition is a loving tribute to the man she called "Dad" as well as a fitting homage to the many fans who called him "The King." We think The King would be very proud of his daughter and the duet that she created for him!

Written by country artist Mac Davis, Elvis Presley released "In the Ghetto" in 1969 on his comeback album, "From Elvis In Memphis." The song reached the top 10 in both the U.S. and U.K. — Elvis' first top 10 chartings in four and three years, respectively. It was also a number one hit in countries including Australia, New Zealand, West Germany and Ireland. It's certainly one of the artist's most memorable songs and moving songs.
Since Elvis released the song, it's been covered by many other notable artists. These include Dolly Parton, Sammy Davis Jr., Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Tracey Chapman and more. Lisa Marie Presley's cover with her father is yet another rendition of the song's incredible legacy. For their cover, Lisa Marie raised money for the Presley Charitable Foundation.
The accompanying video of their cover is just as impactful as the song is. Switching between black-and-white footage of the father and daughter singing, the video also includes clips of babies in their cribs, while some are holding guns. It's a somber visual but one that corresponds to the lyrics of the song. At the time, Lisa Marie revealed that proceeds from the single would go towards transitional housing in New Orleans, which had been ravaged by a hurricane. The musician said at the time, "I wanted to use this for something good."
Beyond breathing new life into his iconic song, Lisa Marie used the duet in order to give back to the world, and we're sure Elvis would be more than impressed with his daughter with what she's achieved.

But it's not the first time Lisa-Marie has sung a duet with her famous dad. She also worked on a newly-released duet between her and her father titled "Where No One Stands Alone," which was released in 2018 on the album of the same name. The album was a compilation of various hits of Elvis' over the years and featured that duet between father and daughter. As with "In the Ghetto," the song was yet another way for her to feel a connection with her dad.
When you listen to the duet, you will be able to instantly tell that Lisa is her father's daughter. Their voices mesh so well on the song that you would think they recorded the song in the studio together.
Lisa Marie still turns to her father for motivation. Even after four decades, Elvis still provides Lisa Marie with advice, life lessons and motivation. For example, Lisa Marie recently went through the struggles associated with addiction. Even though her father has been gone for so long, Elvis was there to help her with her problems. In fact, when she was attempting to lay the vocals down for the new song, she turned to her father for help.
It's incredibly moving to see how seriously Lisa-Marie carries on Elvis' legacy. Whether it's by ensuring his foundation is running to keep his legacy alive for all of his fans or through her own musical endeavors, Lisa-Marie is doing everything she can for her famous father. And we're sure he's smiling down on her.
What do you think, did Lisa Marie do her father proud? If you enjoyed this, then pass it on to others so they can hear it too!
