Elton John, famously known as “Rocket Man” after his hit, has been a global music icon since the 1970s. The five-time Grammy winner has left an undeniable mark on the industry with a career spanning decades. Beyond music, his personal life has also made headlines.

Elton and his husband, David Furnish, have been together since 1993 and married in 2014. They were among the first couples in the United Kingdom to enter into a civil partnership, paving the way for LGBTQ+ rights in the country. Their love story continues through their two sons, Zachary, 14, and Elijah Furnish-John, 12.

In 2010, they welcomed their eldest child, Zachary, at the Centre for Surrogate Parenting in Encino, California. Parenthood has been a profound journey for the couple, who are dedicated to raising their children with strong values despite their privileged upbringing. As Elton steps away from touring, his family remains his greatest priority.

In a 2012 Guardian interview, the singer shared his own past struggles as an only child. At the time, he and Furnish only had Zachary, but he expressed hope for a sibling for Zachary so he wouldn’t be alone. In 2013, the couple welcomed Elijah via the same surrogate. In a 2013 interview with HELLO! Magazine, the singer shared: “Both of us have longed to have children, but the reality that we now have two sons is almost unbelievable.”

In a 2016 appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Elton described his children as “the greatest thing” in his and his partner’s lives, as he and Furnish confirmed they did not want to have any more children. In a 2019 interview with The Sun as reported by HELLO! Magazine, Elton divulged that they were “too old to have anymore,” making it clear that their family would not grow beyond the four of them.

Elton’s immense success comes with many perks, but he and Furnish are committed to teaching their kids the value of money. Elton shared some of his family’s values with HELLO! Magazine:

“They are spoilt in the way they live and how they’re living, but they’re not spoilt when it comes to the rules they have to live by.”

Elton said their boys, Zachary and Elijah, help in the kitchen and garden, earning money as a reward. They also divide their earnings into three categories: charity, saving, and spending.

“They’ve got to learn the value of doing something and earning something for themselves,” Elton explained.

Although the musician has stepped back from touring, he used to keep cardboard cut-outs of his partner and their sons in his dressing room. In March 2024, country singer Kacey Musgraves recalled her time with him on tour. She told The Times:

“I’ll never forget Elton playing in Nashville and getting to catch up with him in his dressing room after with all the Gucci and sunglasses lying around. And a big cardboard cut-out of his husband and kids.”

Despite the distance, Zachary and Elijah often attended their father’s shows and joined him on stage. However, in a 2016 interview on NBC’s “Today” show, Elton admitted that his sons preferred modern hits, like Drake’sHotline Bling” and Bruno Mars’Uptown Funk,” but still sing his hit “Rocket Man” and “Benny and the Jets.”

“They know who I am. They know what I do, but they’re more interested… in their toys. And I’m fine with that,” Elton said

In “Elton John: Never Too Late,” the singer revealed that his sons also worried about his age. He reflected:

“They love their daddy, so they want me to be around forever… Time together is so wonderful and so precious.”

Although Elton and Furnish don’t keep their kids locked up in a mansion, they keep them away from the spotlight. Nevertheless, on Mar. 8, 2022, the musician shared a rare photo of his kids, his husband, and the boys’ godmother, pop singer Lady Gaga.

The quad was at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s 30th Annual Academy Awards Viewing Party on Mar. 27, 2022. Meanwhile, Elton was absent from the event because of a scheduling conflict with his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour. He posted the picture of the partying quad on Instagram to express his disappointment and also send his love.

“So sad to be missing out on these family photos from #EJAFOscars tonight with @DavidFurnish, @LadyGaga and the boys but I’m sending my love to everyone for their support of @EJAF. It means the world to us!” Elton captioned the photo.

Fans loved the image of the little family standing together to take a snapshot, as the boys also looked happy to be there. A fan wrote in the comment section:

“The boys are gorgeous 👏.”

Several fans also thought the boys were cute.

“Just Beautiful ❤️❤️,” a user remarked. A second person echoed their sentiments and wrote, “Really nice looking boys! ❤️.” Another gushed over the family and Lady Gaga, saying, “😍😍 what a handsome family! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ and Gaga rocks!”

Elton’s legacy extends far beyond music – his greatest joy is his family. Despite his global fame, he and Furnish have prioritized raising their sons, Zachary and Elijah, with strong values, love, and stability. From teaching them financial responsibility to ensuring they experience a grounded upbringing, Elton is deeply committed to fatherhood.

With touring on the backburner, Elton cherishes time with his family, embracing the moments that matter most. While his songs will live on for generations, his most cherished role remains being a devoted husband and father, shaping a future where love and family come first.
