Elephant Rescues Baby Calf From Drowning In River

It's been said that elephants are among some of the smartest and most compassionate mammals in the elephant kingdom. And when you watch this video of a female elephant heroically saving a baby elephant from being swept away in the river, it won't be hard to see why.

At the beginning of the clip, we see the adult elephant in a muddy river with the baby next to her. While the mother seems to have no problem holding her footing, the baby struggles not to be swept away in the churning waves. The calf helplessly reaches out its little trunk, but it can't seem to break free of the rushing waters. It's clear that there's only one thing that can be done.

In a series of photos, we see the adult elephant climb back onto shore and guide the baby back onto the muddy shores along with her. But the little calf is still struggling. It's too small to climb up the hill alone, and it seems like any minute the calf will plunge back into the churning, frothing waters. What's a mother to do?

It looks like something you'd see in a Disney film. The elephant reaches out with her trunk and wraps it around the calf, then carries it to safety. When we next see the elephant and the calf, they're happily mingling with their family again as if nothing happened. If elephants could speak English, we can only imagine the conversations they'd be having right now.

"What happened?" "Is he all right?" "Good thing you were there to spring into action!"

This day could have ended in tragedy, but instead, it ended with the baby elephant happily rejoining the rest of its family. And it's all thanks to the quick thinking and compassionate attitude of one heroic elephant.

Elephants live in a matriarchal society, where the females are the leaders of their communities. They also have strong maternal instincts, which lead them to immediately jump into action whenever a calf is in danger, even if it's not their child.

There's a reason that compassionate mothers are often called "elephant moms." They're wise, gentle, and nurturing just like female elephants, and they'd do anything for their beloved child.

In addition to their strong maternal instincts, female elephants are also among the smartest and wisest of the group. They know where to go to find food, how to avoid threats from predators and hunters, and how to raise their young until they're old enough to fend for themselves.

Most communities of elephants have a female leader that the rest of the elephants listen to and look up to. In a sense, she's the role model for the rest of the community. And if she's anything like the brave elephant in this video, you can rest assured that the community rests in good hands.

We might not be able to communicate directly with elephants, but as this video shows, maybe humans and elephants aren't so different after all.
