It’s been over 15 years since Natalie “Nadya” Suleman, famously dubbed “Octomom,” made headlines for giving birth to the world’s first surviving set of octuplets. Nadya conceived her children via IVF but had not planned on having octuplets. To make this even more astonishing, Nadya already had six other children when the octuplets were born in 2009. The world watched in fascination and often controversy as she navigated life with 14 children.

Over 15 years later, attention was back on the large family following news of the release of the Lifetime film, “I Was Octomom,” and a docuseries, “Confessions of Octomom.” The film premiered on Mar. 8, 2025, while the docuseries came out two days later. Both follow Nadya’s journey and those of her 14 children, all conceived via IVF. To promote the shows, she sat down for a photo shoot and an interview with most of her brood, opening up about herself and their unique family.

“Natalie Suleman is just a mom of many and she is very, very, very grateful,” she described herself. “We are a loving family and we’re there for each other. All of my kids are just very humble, grounded, kind people with good hearts.”

As to why she chose to have that many children, Nadya responded that she’d been unhappy growing up as an only child and always wanted a large family.

“But it’s not enough to say I wanted a big family because I was lonely,” she said. “There is an amalgamation of factors. I wanted kids to create maybe a safe and predictable little world that I lacked growing up. So then of course, I projected onto my future family.”

While the public fixated on the spectacle of 14 children, they themselves were growing up with an unconventional upbringing that few could relate to. Now, as some of them step into young adulthood, one of the oldest siblings of the octuplets has spoken out about the emotional challenges she faced – particularly anger.

Nadya’s eldest daughter, Amerah Suleman, 22, confessed her feelings about being the eldest sister to octuplets. Ahead of her appearance in the docuseries “Confessions of Octomom,” Amerah revealed that she struggled with feelings of resentment, frustration, and isolation throughout her childhood after the birth of the octuplets. She was just 6 years old in 2009 and already had five other siblings when her mom delivered the subsequent eight babies.

“At first I felt shut out,” she confessed.

She went on to explain the significant changes that the event brought to their lives, particularly her childhood, saying:

“It was a complete 180 in our lives, so I think we really didn’t know how to handle it, especially me, but I think over time I just decided I had to step up and be a second mom figure, and that’s what I did.”

Amerah shared that while life with five other siblings was great and they never lacked anything, things quickly changed when eight more children came along. Eventually, she became angry at their new circumstances.

“Then when the eight were born, she tried to maintain that normalcy, I guess you could say with us. But slowly down the line, throughout the years, it trickled. We got tighter and tighter and tighter with money. We were penny pinching. And I remember just having a lot of anger.”

Amerah now works as an operations manager in a bank and lives down the street from her family.

“I loved the big family dynamic. For myself, I wouldn’t want as big as a family as my mom has, don’t get me wrong, but I definitely want more than two, three kids,” she said.
