Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is the wife of Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II. They married in 1999, and she became Countess of Wessex before gaining the Duchess title in 2023 when Edward was granted the Edinburgh dukedom.
The British royal family has a long tradition of paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice of serving their country and the crown on Armistice Day. In 2024, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, took a prominent role in leading the nation’s commemorations and doing so solo, showing her growing influence within the royal family and the respect she commands in the public eye.
For the first time, she led and attended the day’s ceremonies without her husband, Prince Edward. Together, Edward and Sophie, 60, have two children: Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. Notably, Sophie’s presence this year also comes on the heels of her visible support for the Princess of Wales, Catherine, during another royal engagement.
The commemoration, observed on Nov. 11, 2024, marked the anniversary of the World War peace armistice coming into effect. That year, the Duchess of Edinburgh led the ceremony held in Staffordshire. She also read an extract from “For the Fallen,” a poem by Laurence Binyon, before laying poppy wreaths at the memorial for armed forces.
The Duchess rose to the occasion, proving her ability to lead in royal ceremonies. Looking graceful and demure during the outing, she exuded charm as she paid her respects.
Elsewhere in the country, King Charles III marked the occasion by leading the proceedings and two minutes of silence in central London.

In Staffordshire, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, didn’t just prove herself to be a great representative of the royal family; she also extended her strength and support to Princess Catherine. A day before her appearance at the Armistice Service, she stood by Catherine’s side on the balcony of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development office, where they commemorated Remembrance Sunday with a service. This was a particularly touching moment, especially since it was only Catherine’s fifth major royal engagement since returning to the public eye and official duties after her cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The Duchess looked demure yet resplendent in a black outfit and a bright poppy pin above a stylish brooch for the service. Her Armani coat was accessorized with suede boots and a hat with a bow at the back. She opted for classic jewelry with a diamond cross necklace and pearl and diamond earrings. She also added a thoughtful touch with a personalized message on her wreath, which read:
“In memory of our fallen. Sophie.”
Walking around the monument, she looked emotional as she quietly read the names of those who lost their lives in service to their country and loved ones. Sophie concluded the day by speaking with veterans who had come out to commemorate the occasion after the service. While this was one of her more public engagements, the Duchess is also a working member of the royal family, holding patronage of over 70 charities and organizations. She spends most of her time in service at schools, hospitals, charities and military bases, as well as community projects.
