Marriage, moving, children, divorce, and death are all reasons why families may become abruptly uprooted. While these are natural occurrences in life, it is not just humans who have to deal with the aftereffects of these situations.
A dog named 'Smiley' was made aware of this sad truth when he was brought to shelter upon his family finding out they were expecting a baby. Surrendered to a crowded shelter located in Brooklyn, New York, Smiley was forced to leave the life he knew as his owners prepared for their new arrival.
Unfortunately, this happens all too often and the staff of dog shelters are forced to pick up the broken pieces of these animals' shattered lives.

An Angel Finds an Unloved Pup
According to The Dodo, Julie Carner, an advocate for shelter dogs and loving mom to pit bulls re-posted Smiley on Facebook and urged families to give him another chance. The post said: "I'm a good boy, I would have loved that new baby! Please help me, I don't want to die..."
With his good manners, attentive nature, and fun-loving attitude, she knew that Smiley would be a great addition to any family. If only she could convince someone of what she believed in her heart.
Olena Kagui happened to come across Carner's post, and one look into Smiley's eyes made her heart drop. Those sad eyes begging for salvation pulled at her heartstrings, and Olena began to cry. Despite her husband's protection that they could not get a dog just then, he was soon convinced to foster the dog until a good home could be found.
Made for Each Other
After months of fostering this sweet pup, Olena and her husband decided to adopt Smiley themselves. They could not bear the thought of losing this sweet, little guy. Smiley already felt like part of their family, and there is no doubt he found his forever home with this couple.
As a result of their journey, Olena and her husband are now avid supporters and promoters of shelter dogs. After all, they would never have found Smiley if it were not for another dog-lover who felt the same way.
It's been two years since Smiley was rescued and he seems to be healthy and happy. On August 29, Olena posted a picture of Smiley with the caption: “Will this make me skinny? as he laid adorably on a stationary treadmill.
