A family in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg in South Africa, had a scary incident in their own backyard when their small dog fell into their swimming pool. Security camera footage captured the frightening event of the poor pup stumbling along the perimeter of the family pool before ultimately falling into the water. He struggled to work to stay afloat in the high water, but luckily their rescue dog came to the rescue and saved the small pup from nearly drowning.
While dogs may typically be a man’s best friend, these pups proved to be great companions for one another. A toy Pomeranian named Chucky unexpectedly fell into his owners’ pool and tried his best to swim across the water and get back on land but failed to do so.
After a few minutes of struggling to keep his tiny head above the water, his friend, a Staffordshire bull terrier named Jessie, came to his rescue as she tried to figure out how to save her tiny dog friend. A video of the rescue was uploaded to YouTube on April 10, 2021. While it doesn’t show the entire ordeal, it gives insight into how dramatic and scary the experience was.
As Jessie continued to follow Chucky the toy Pom around the pool, she tried to find the best way to get her small friend out of the water. She tried out a few methods, failing to get a real grasp on the other dog. The little dog continued to fight for breath while his larger friend tried her best to help her for more than 30 minutes. The story had a happy ending, however.

During an interview with TimesLIVE on April 13, 2021, Byron Thanarayen and his wife Melissa talked about the scary incident. Their little 13-year-old toy Pomeranian, Chucky, almost drowned in their swimming pool but was luckily rescued by their 7-year-old Staffie named Jessie.
Their dogs had never gone into their pool unsupervised in the five years they had been living there, which is why this turn of events was so scary and shocking for the couple and their two dogs. “We tried to look for clues as to where he could have wet his head,” Bryan told TimesLIVE about finding Chucky cold and wet. “We thought maybe he dipped his head in the water, but there was no mess in the house to support this suggestion,” he said.
Thankfully, the couple had installed security cameras around the perimeter of their house, including one directed at the swimming pool in the backyard. After seeing the footage, they found out that Chucky had in fact fallen into the pool.
The poor pup had been walking alongside the pool’s edge before stumbling and falling into it. He quickly got wet and worried as he struggled to keep his head above the water. While swimming around the pool, trying to escape it, Jessie spotted her friend and hurriedly came running over to help him out.
The larger dog continued to follow her friend as the small pup floated around the pool. There were a few moments when Jessie got close to grabbing Chucky, using her paws and mouth to try to pull the smaller dog up and out of the water but ultimately failing. This didn’t discourage the Staffie though as she kept up her pace following Chucky as the smaller dog struggled to swim.

After 34 long minutes of trying to save the smaller dog, Jessie finally got a good grip with her teeth and pulled Chucky out of the pool to safety. The rescue dog had rescued his tiny companion.
“It was heart-wrenching to watch,” Bryan said about the incident. He went on to praise the dog he and his wife rescued from the SPCA four years prior.
“Jessie is the best dog we ever had,” he said. “I’m really proud of her, considering she is the youngest.”
Jessie and Chucky have always gotten along since they were first introduced to each other. They found a friend within each other, which was a critical factor when it came time for Chucky to trust Jessie to save him from his near-drowning experience.
“Our dogs know how to swim, but they always swim with us and not when we are not with them,” Bryan said. “They also know where the pool steps are.” Unfortunately, the toy Pom missed those steps when he stumbled into the large pool, but luckily Jessie was quickly there to help. During the interview, Bryan mentioned that he and his wife were planning on installing a pool cover, especially following this scary encounter. “It never occurred to us previously that we needed the cover, but since this incident we saw how important it is to have one,” he said.
Although Chucky struggled for quite some time in the pool, he stayed resilient as he swam around and kept his head above the surface of the water. But after Jessie's long and tedious endeavor, the larger dog saved her tiny friend.
