Despite 5 Miscarriages & Brush With Death, James Van Der Beek’s Wife Has Remained His Rock For Over A Decade

Following his colorectal cancer diagnosis, James Van Der Beek’s health issues have been making headlines. Known and loved for playing the titular role of Dawson Leery in the coming-of-age hit series “Dawson’s Creek,” James has also guest-starred in many other shows. Behind the scenes of his decades-long career, the actor is a committed family man to his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek and their six children. The couple have been smitten with one another since their first meeting in Israel in 2009 and tied the knot just one year later. However, neither one was prepared for the curveballs life would throw them. 

Over the years, they welcomed six beautiful children: four daughters and two sons. But their journey to parenthood was marked by profound loss. Kimberly suffered five miscarriages, an experience that left emotional and physical scars. While their family has been in the headlines for James’s health issues, this is not their first battle with life-threatening problems.

Despite all they have been through, their love story seems to grow more resilient. Between back-to-back miscarriages and fighting for her life, Kimberly has endured so much and James never ceases to celebrate her publicly, like in this Instagram post captioned:

“I’m still earning her. We’ve been through joy and pain and everything in between, and even at the height of our most impassioned arguments... she’s who I want by my side.”

In 2019, one of Kimberly’s miscarriages led to a life-threatening situation. She suffered significant blood loss and required emergency medical care. James later recounted the terrifying experience, describing how close he came to losing her. James recalled that they were at home watching television when Kimberley started feeling pain and later had a miscarriage in the shower.

“It was just so much pain, and it was so unexpected because everything was right, everything was fairy tale. Everything was coming together perfectly,” James told People Magazine. “It progressed very quickly into being worried about Kim. we were both just crying and sobbing and there was a lot of blood. Way more blood than any delivery…And then Kim lied down in the shower and then wasn’t waking up. So that’s when I called 911.”

Despite the trauma, the couple continued to lean on each other, finding solace in their shared faith and the support of their children. He also revealed that he was leaning on his family’s support in the wake of his cancer diagnosis.

“I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.” 

The actor continues to document his beautiful family’s journey on social media and reflected on his challenging period dealing with his health issues with a heartwarming caption:

“I’m more grateful than ever to my super human wife who has shown up on levels I never knew possible. Who has shown me what unconditional love is and the magic that comes from that. I am in awe of you.”
