The late Debbie Reynolds was a Hollywood legend. She was a singer, actress and businesswoman with a career spanning almost 70 decades. She accomplished a great deal of success during this time with several awards and honors and an impressive filmography. Not only that, but Reynolds’ family members entered the entertainment industry as well, proving that talent was certainly in their genes.

Reynolds was born as Mary Frances Reynolds on Apr. 1, 1932, in El Paso, Texas. Her family did not have much money, but everyone worked hard and tried to stay optimistic. Reynolds and her family then moved to Burbank, California, in 1939. During her high school years, Reynolds won a beauty contest. However, the then-teenager rarely dated as she had no money for attractive clothes. She was later offered a contract with Warner Brothers. Through them, she developed the stage name, Debbie.

Reynolds’ breakthrough role was also her first leading role: Kathy Selden in the 1952 film “Singin’ in the Rain.” She starred alongside Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor, and the film, only a modest hit at the time, earned several awards and nominations.

Shortly after, Reynolds was thrusted into the spotlight and began landing role after role. One of those roles was as Tammy in “Tammy and the Bachelor” in 1957. Her performance of the film’s song “Tammy” was a hit with fans and critics alike, topping the Billboard music charts at the time. Reynolds even went on to release an album a few years later.

Although Reynolds is no longer with us, her unforgettable performance of “Tammy” is something fans to this day still hold close to their hearts and deeply cherish.

Is there anything Reynolds couldn’t do? During her life, she found great success in the entertainment industry due to her dynamic acting abilities and beautiful singing voice. Reynolds’ breakthrough role in “Singin’ in the Rain” alongside Kelly and O’Connor helped her find her footing in the industry, and from there on, her career flourished. Reynolds went on to star in “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” in 1964, and her performance as the socialite Molly Brown earned her an Academy Award nomination.

The actress went on to have her own television show called “The Debbie Reynolds Show.” Although it only aired from 1969 to 1970, it earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Reynolds founded the Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio in 1979, but it was demolished 40 years later.

With the start of the 2000s came a new wave of fans for Reynolds as she landed the role of Aggie Cromwell in the “Halloweentown” series. The Hollywood starlet appeared in all four movies: “Halloweentown” (1998), “Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge” (2001), “Halloweentown High” (2004), and “Return to Halloweentown” (2006).

Even late in her life, Reynolds was still performing and being honored for all the work she had done. She received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2015. “Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds,” a documentary about Reynolds’ life, was released the following year. Reynolds also released a couple of memoirs during her life, including “Debbie: My Life” in 1988 and “Unsinkable: A Memoir” in 2013.

In her personal life, Reynolds was married three times. The first was in 1955 to singer Eddie Fisher, whom she had Todd Fisher and “Stars Wars” icon Carrie Fisher with. The pair divorced in 1959 after it was discovered that Eddie had had an affair with Elizabeth Taylor.

Reynolds later went on to marry businessman Harry Karl for 13 years and then to real estate developer Richard Hamlett for 12 years.

On Dec. 28, 2016, Reynolds died of a stroke, according to her website. She passed just one day after her daughter died following a heart attack. Reynolds’ granddaughter Billie Lourd is an actress known for her work in “American Horror Story” and is carrying on the family legacy.

Although Reynolds is no longer with us, her memory has continued to live on as people today still adore her past work. Kids who grew up watching “Halloweentown” now play it for their children, and folks who were fans of Reynolds’ early career still can’t help but sing along to the songs from her classic films.

One of those songs is “Tammy” from the 1957 film “Tammy and the Bachelor.” Adapted from a novel, the romantic comedy starred Reynolds as Tammy alongside Walter Brennan as Grandpa Dinwitty and Leslie Nielsen as Peter Brent. It became the first of four films in the “Tammy” franchise.

The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars and has continued to be covered by many artists as time has passed. It even became one of the bestselling songs at the time. “Tammy’s in love,” Reynolds sang in the heart-wrenching track.

“One of my favorote (sic) actress as a child. The first movie I saw and how I loved to sing the song Tammy,” one fan said. Another said, “Such a sweet, wholesome, heartwarming film. Beautiful music, and beautiful Debbie Reynolds. I love it!”

With so much grace and talent onscreen, it’s not surprising that people are still fond of Reynolds and her performance.
