Full House” actor Dave Coulier, well-known for his portrayal of the sitcom family’s beloved Uncle Joey, revealed in late 2024 that he has been diagnosed with Stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that develops in the lymphatic system.

The 65-year-old actor shared the sad news in an episode of the “Today” show on Nov. 13, 2024, revealing that he had exhibited symptoms over a month earlier after he had caught a cold. Although he had, in the past, experienced enlarged lymph nodes in his neck and armpits whenever he got sick, this time, it was different, he said. Coulier recalled feeling a lump in his groin the size of a golf ball right after he fell sick, prompting him to seek medical help.

“It swelled up immediately,” he told Today.com. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’m either really sick, or my body’s really reacting to something.’”

He revealed that initial tests showed nothing was wrong, but doctors then performed a biopsy on a lymph node “just to be safe.” They then gave him alarming news.

“Three days later, my doctors called me back and they said, ‘We wish we had better news for you, but you have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and it’s called B cell and it’s very aggressive,’” he recalled.

Having lost many loved ones to cancer, Coulier told the outlet he chose to face the diagnosis “head-on,” with the support of his wife, family and close friends. He immediately began chemotherapy and shaved his head.

Meanwhile, his friend and “Full House” co-star John Stamos showed his support for Coulier in his own special way. However, despite his good intentions, his gesture received mixed reactions from the public.

Amid Dave Coulier’s cancer diagnosis and in the wake of him shaving his head, John Stamos posted three photos of him wearing a bald cap and standing next to Coulier. The caption read:

“Nothing like throwing on a bald cap and flexing some Photoshop skills to show some love and solidarity with my bro @dcoulier.”

However, many didn’t think this was appropriate, including one person who commented:

“God bless Dave but is this really appropriate? A bald cap is showing solidarity? You can just take your cap off and be ‘normal’ again. When people take this route they actually shave their head. I can’t help but feel that you’re using Dave’s diagnoses as a way to make yourself more likeable.”

Many thought he was taking advantage of Coulier’s situation to get likes, calling the gesture “inappropriate” and “shallow.”

“This is so pathetic. Like, your hair is more important than solidarity but you want to perform like you care,” one wrote.

Still, others came to Stamos’ defense, mostly importantly Coulier himself, who took to social media to stand up for him, writing:

“It’s our friendship (me and John) and this is how we are handling a very tough time. I’m a comedian and humor is what drives me. John knows how to cheer me up and I laughed out loud when he arrived wearing a bald cap — being a true loving friend and brother.”

Dealing with a cancer diagnosis is highly personal in nature, with many people needing different things along their own unique journey. Perhaps, as some comments suggested, Coulier did not need Stamos to actually shave his head to show how much he cared. Perhaps, a humorous gesture from a good friend was all Coulier needed to feel less alone.
