Customer Who Allegedly Threw Soup At Service Worker's Face Has Been Arrested

According to KWTX, a local Texas news outlet, police arrested 31-year-old Amanda Nicole Martinez after she allegedly threw hot soup in a restaurant employee’s face on Nov. 7 in Temple, Texas. Martinez, who has been charged with assault causing bodily injury, was arrested and placed in Bell County Jail.

The incident went viral when someone on TikTok uploaded a video of the altercation. Martinez began to argue with the restaurant’s manager, claiming that her soup was too hot — so hot that the take-out container’s plastic lid melted into the soup.

Broland, who says she offered Martinez a refund, told the customer that she needed to calm down or leave. Otherwise, Broland said she would call the police. That’s the moment when Martinez can be seen throwing the soup directly into Broland’s face. While the soup had cooled down by that point, Broland says that the experience was still painful.

“My eyes were stinging so bad. They were burning. And spices were all inside of the top part of my nose, and it caused me to have a nosebleed,” Broland explains in the video below.

According to the Daily Mail, Broland also described the experience as similar to getting “pepper sprayed.”

“When I last spoke with TPD (Temple Police Department), it seemed like this process would take a lot longer. I'm not sure how to feel about being the one to put someone in jail. But I'm glad to see that she's facing the consequences of her actions,” Broland told KCEN News.

The restaurant has since banned Martinez from returning.

The incident began when Martinez called the restaurant, complaining that her Menudo soup was too hot. Broland told the Daily Mail that she apologized, but every time she would “mention a refund or a free replacement meal,” she cut Broland off and began to curse at her.

"Of course, I offered her refunds and was trying to get her a replacement meal or something completely different if she wasn't in the mood for soup anymore," Broland said according to Inside Edition. "But she continued to yell."

Unfortunately, Martinez was not calming down no matter how much Broland tried to talk to her. "She still continued to yell, make a scene, and curse with families and children around," Broland said. "That's when I said, 'Calm down or leave. Or I'm going to be calling the police.'"

Broland also said in a Tik Tok video, “I pulled my phone out and that's when I said, 'If you do not leave or calm down, I am going to call the police.'"

Throughout the exchange, Broland continued to remain respectful towards Martinez, no matter how much she was being yelled at. Unfortunately, Martinez did not want to hear anything and got even angrier.

Speaking about what happened afterward, Broland described, "I said, 'Ma'am, I can still help you and get you something. I just ask that you don't yell and cuss at me.' That's the moment she threw it at me." Naturally, having hot soup thrown at your face is a shocking and painful experience. As seen in the viral video, Martinez left the restaurant right after what she did.

Thankfully, the soup had cooled down before it hit Broland's face, but it was still a terrible experience. "My eyes were stinging so bad, they were burning," she told Inside Edition. "The spices were all in the inside of my nose and caused me to have a nose bleed."

Since Broland opened up about her experience on the platform, she has received an outpouring of support and thousands of likes and comments. “I really only expected this to be locally viral,” she told the Daily Mail. “I have a lot of friends in the restaurant industry, so I knew they would relate to this, or at least understand my frustration. I had no idea I would be contacted by news outlets and have the footage shared thousands of times.”

Broland told the Daily Mail that her coworkers and customers at the restaurant were also supportive.

“I was in shock, I ran to the bathroom. I was just crying and this really nice woman was wiping me off with paper towels and wiping my face and my hair and was so, so kind. One of my coworkers took off her work shirt, put on her hoodie, and gave me her work shirt,” she said.

After causing so much bodily and emotional damage to Broland, Martinez was arrested on November 17, 2021. According to the Daily Mail, if Martinez is found guilty on charges of assault causing bodily harm — a Class A misdemeanor — she could face up to a $4,000 fine and one year in prison.
