While teachers educate our nation's next generation, janitors, cafeteria workers, and other school personnel work to ensure that kids have a clean, safe place to learn and grow.
School workers must also occasionally protect our children from those who would seek to do them harm, as evidenced in the story of a school crossing guard from California. Adrian Young, a crossing girl, knew exactly what to do when an 8-year-old girl called out for help near Alexandria Avenue Elementary School in 2016.

Adrian Young was working as a crossing guard at Alexandria Avenue Elementary School in East Hollywood back in 2016, when she was forced into a violent encounter with a would-be kidnapper.
Standing at just 4 feet 8 inches tall, Adrian might not be physically imposing, but she nevertheless takes her duty in ensuring that the kids of Alexandria Avenue Elementary get home safely very seriously. As Adrian went about her job, an 8-year-old little girl approached her, telling her, “Please don’t let her take me. I don’t know her, she’s not my mom.”

Adrian immediately surged into action. The plucky crossing guard got between the girl and her kidnapper, telling the young one to hold onto her as tight as possible. Adrian also held the little girl in a tight grip of her own. The kidnapper was not happy that Adrian had decided to intervene and began attacking her. Adrian fought back, later telling CNN reporters that she went into mother mode.
Adrian was able to successfully fight off the child predator. Later on, with Adrian and the little girl’s help, police were able to identify the kidnapper as Maria Ramirez. Ramirez was charged with attempted kidnapping in conjunction with the incident.

Later that week, Adrian was honored by the Los Angeles Police Department for her heroism. A special plaque was presented to Adrian by Mitch O’Farrell, a member of the Los Angeles City Council.
Councilman O’Farrell praised Adrian for her good deed, saying that she went above and beyond in her response to the situation. While grateful for Adrian’s quick thinking, Sharon Arellano, the 8-year-old girl’s mother, says that she feels that more needs to be done to protect the children of Alexandria Avenue Elementary School.

In the end, Adrian’s actions are proof positive of the guardianship that school employees have for the children in their care. Adrian protected the little girl like she was her own child, saving her from a kidnapper and helping police bring a criminal to justice.
