After being delayed for a year, the Summer Olympic Games of 2021 are set to begin July 23, 2021, in Tokyo, Japan. While people all over the world are excited to see their country represented in the games, the delay has really amped up the anticipation and made people even more excited to see the spectacle. The women’s gymnastics team for the United States has been gearing up for the trip to Tokyo, and the athletes have not been shy when it comes to showing off their absolutely dynamic routines and tricks.
Gymnast Simone Biles is not just one of the best in the country, but in the world, as she has earned herself a handful of titles and medals. With Biles leading the team, there’s no telling just what the women will bring during the Olympics this time around. Other athletes on the team have been proving themselves as worthy of earning an Olympic berth for the upcoming games, such as Jade Carey.
With only six spots open for Team USA alongside a crew of alternates, Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles have appeared to be likely candidates to join their teammate, Biles. With such strong and imminent competition within the team to clinch that spot to go to Tokyo, the female athletes have been working extremely hard to showcase exactly what they have in store. In late 2021, Carey made sure to clinch her spot and make her presence even more known with the debut of a brand new skill for a floor routine.

On June 27, 2021, the Washington Post reported that Biles, Chiles, and Lee had guaranteed their trip to Tokyo to compete as part of the Olympic team. According to the news outlet, Biles has been undefeated in the all-around since 2013. The other gymnasts, such as Grace McCallum and MyKayla Skinner, still had plenty of skills left to show. However, it was Carey who really upped the ante with her knockout performance.
While each gymnast is known for their specialty, being versatile and showcasing new skills can be critical when it comes to earning a solid place in competitive games. During the trials, coach Tom Forster said that the selection committee wanted to preserve the “integrity of competition” and explained that “the better thing to do is let the athletes select themselves.”
Carey had entered the trials with her Olympic berth already secured, as she opted to pursue an individual sport rather than a spot on the four-member team. During the 2021 U.S. Championships Podium Training, Carey debuted a brand new skill that is sure to wow anyone who witnesses it. The skill has been described as a double salto backward stretched with a 3/1 twist. The more common phrases describing this impressive technique include triple-double layout, triple twisting double layout, and double layout 3/1.
While executing the new skill, Carey seemed to have incredible control over her athletic body. She twisted and turned in the air effortlessly before coming down at a nearly perfect stop on the floor. The move is set to be called “The Carey” if the gymnast is able to successfully perform it at the 2021 Olympics or any other International Gymnastics Federation competition.
