Cops Take The Lead On Fun Dance Performance

Watch out Bruno Mars, the police are after you! You may have thought that since the song “Uptown Funk” wasn’t in the Billboard #1 slot anymore, you wouldn’t hear much more about it. But these police departments decided to revive it with a vengeance… and a twist.

It started with the Corinth TX police department offering the Norfolk VA police department a Texas-sized challenge to make a lip sync video. Police are trained to react immediately and decisively to all kinds of challenges. Just because this one didn’t involve a crime or emergency made no difference.

Norfolk didn’t hesitate, and the lip sync challenge was on. As Norfolk Police Department spokesperson Cpl. William Pickering told The Virginian-Pilot, “We wanted to show the community our primary objective is to protect and serve the community, but we are not robots. We share a lot of the same interests the community has.”

Apparently dancing is one of them.It wasn’t hard to get all the uniformed officers on their (dancing) feet. Then all the support personnel decided that joining the officers was only fitting. According to Simplemost, even the fire department stepped in.

The Norfolk PD’s public information department expanded its usual duties to include choreography. But who could play Bruno Mars in their video? The winner of the Bruno Mars look-alike contest was Officer Christopher Taveras, who literally danced up and down at the chance to be the lead in the video, reports Simplemost.

So with sunglasses and uniforms on, the officers began their dancing march. In the video Taveras leads them through the police department corridors while people stand, leave their desks, and join the dance. In one room, employees pop up from their cubicle with orange safety cones doubling as trumpets.

The dancers keep funking it out down to the police garage, where gleaming police motorcycles get an up-tempo polish as part of the show. Outside, red and blue lights flash on a myriad of police cars and fire trucks.

The entire ensemble gathers in front of the vehicles for a spectacular Broadway-worthy show-stopping finish. And even though it isn’t explicitly said in the video, the message is clear: “Top THAT, Texas!”

Even more amazingly, all the footage was completed in one take. The police certainly achieved their goal of having the community see them as 'real people' too. So far they have over 28 million views just on Facebook.

Now Norfolk has dared other police departments to top their efforts, and this lip sync trend is starting to go viral. The Washington DC officers have openly accepted the Norfolk challenge.

It will be interesting to see how they top this! Share your thoughts on this fun police dance in the comments section, and let everyone know that cops have got the moves too!
