Comedian And Star Of Coronation Street Roy Hudd Has Passed Away Aged 83

Beloved British actor and comedian Roy Hudd, most famous for his role in Coronation Street as undertaker Archie Shuttleworth, passed away on Sunday afternoon at the age of 83.

On Monday, Roy Hudd’s agent released a statement announcing the death of the actor following a ‘short illness’.

"After a short illness, Roy passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Sunday the 15th of March, with his wife Debbie at his side,” the statement said, according to the BBC.

"The family would ask you to respect their privacy at this very sad time."

Roy Hudd made a name for himself in 1957 after breaking through as an up-and-coming comedian. He then went on to make his radio debut in 1959 on Workers' Playtime before becoming the host of two talk shows, the Roy Hudd Show and Illustrated Weekly Hudd in the 60s. 

Apart from a TV legend, Hudd is also recognized for his contribution to the British Musical scene. The comedian wrote books and was President of the British Music Hall Society.

Hudd had since been recognized on numerous occasions for his profound talents in acting. In 1983, he was named Best Actor in a Musical by the Society of West End Theatre Award for his role Bud Flanagan in Underneath the Arches.

The actor received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Westminster for his work and was even awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2004.
