College Dance Team Leaves Fans In Awe With Epic Performance of Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’

The Tiger Girls, Louisiana State University’s renowned dance team, captured the internet’s attention with their championship-winning performance of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” at the Super Bowl of Dance.  

Known for their precision, flawless technique, and ability to connect with fans, the Tiger Girls are a powerful representation of LSU pride.

The dance team regularly performs at major events like football and basketball games, igniting school spirit, but their impact goes beyond the sidelines. 

The team made history by securing their fourth title at the 2024 Universal Dance Association Hip Hop Competition with yet another unforgettable performance. 

During the competition in Orlando, Florida, the team honored the King of Pop with a tribute that merged classic moves with innovative new twists.

The girls looked like they’d stepped straight out of a Michael Jackson music video, dressed in sharp white satin suits, glittering ties, classic sneakers, and signature fedoras. 

Their outfits perfectly honored the icon’s style and set the stage for their flawless execution of “Smooth Criminal.”

Released in 1988 as part of Jackson’s Bad album, “Smooth Criminal” is known for its infectious beat and challenging dance sequences. 

The Tiger Girls brought the energy and precision required to perform this unforgettable routine, proving once again why they are one of the most memorable teams of their era.

In an interview with Southern Living, head coach Kandace Hale said that when she was approached by choreographers Carsen Lowe and Sammy McFadden with the idea, she didn’t think twice. 

She went on to say how it was “a classic,” and how “no one has done it.”

The Tiger Girls are known for their flowing rhythm and ability to channel powerful energy into every routine. 

Their performance honored and elevated Jackson’s legacy, perfectly showcasing their talent. And it’s safe to say that their passion for the King of Pop was evident. 

They ensured it was a stunning show by blending his iconic choreography with modern interpretations. One of the most iconic moments came when the entire team locked into a diagonal formation and flawlessly executed Jackson’s signature hip thrusts.

However, this top-tier performance wasn’t without its fair share of challenges, which choreographers Lowe and McFadden opened up about.

They wrote on Instagram:

“To be faced with the challenge to take on an icon such as Michael and bring his essence and star power into the present day is hands down the most difficult path we could have picked.” 

They added: “But with the village that is this team, the choreographers, consultants and coaches—we know we have no choice but to aim for the highest form of excellence.”

Fans online raved about the “precision” of the performance, with one user commenting on the team’s post: “I keep watching it over and over…. Just incredible talent, precision and timing! WOW!🤩 🤩🤩”

Reflecting on her pride in her team’s accomplishment, coach Hale explained:

“In today’s world, it’s like everybody wants to be everybody else. We wanted to try to do what we do best.”
