Colin Hanks Doesn’t Always Like The Way Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Grandparent His 2 Daughters

Tom Hanks has established an incredible career, starring in more than 80 films over the years. So, to say Tom has made only a few great films would be an understatement, considering he has numerous well-loved blockbusters and award-winning films under his belt. 

Some of Tom’s most notable films include "Sleepless In Seattle," "Apollo 13," "Philadelphia," "Forrest Gump" and the "Toy Story" franchise. Tom has shown his wide range as an actor over his four decades in the film industry as he has played a variety of characters and showcased just how capable and adaptable he can be. 

Aside from being hailed as “America’s dad,” Tom also has a mighty family of his own. He is married to Rita Wilson, and they are a well-known power couple in Hollywood. The couple has two sons together, Chet and Truman Hanks, while Tom has two children from a previous relationship with Samantha Lewes – Colin and Elizabeth Hanks. 

All of the family members are actors, have tried acting at one point in time, or work in the entertainment industry behind the scenes.

Colin, Tom's first child, has his own legacy of acting and has also created his own path. We're taking a look at the similarities and differences between the father-son duo, both in looks and in terms of their Hollywood repertoires.

Aside from being a successful actor and producer, Colin is also a proud father of two children named Olivia and Charlotte. Although his kids are close with their famous grandparents, Colin isn’t always happy with the way Tom and Wilson raise them.

Tom and Wilson spoke with Entertainment Tonight in June 2023 where they gushed about being grandparents, and it appears that they’re enjoying it so far. At the time of the interview, the couple attended the premiere of “Asteroid City” by Wes Anderson at Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

The pair spoke about their grandchildren as Tom said: "All you gotta do is love those little brats and they're better than TV. ... They're not little brats, they're extraordinary young women." Wilson seemed to agree as she said, "They are extraordinary young women.”

Aside from Colin’s daughters, Olivia and Charlotte, Tom and Wilson are also grandparents to Michaiah, Chet’s child.

Wilson later opened up about the key to being a wonderful grandparent as she noted that the most important thing is to find time to bond with one's grandchildren as well as give them attention.

"You got to get on the trampoline with them, you got to get in the pool with them, you got to get on the tennis court, you got to do all the sports… You just got to hang out,” she said.

Tom later chimed in and noted that grandparents should always know how to make perfect food for the little ones, as he jokingly said, "You have to make their macaroni and cheese just perfectly.”

This was not the first time Tom shared his experience being a grandfather as he told E! News in a 2018 interview that the best thing about having grandchildren is the “entertainment factor.”

“You don’t have to watch TV, you just gotta keep an eye on and follow them around and your day is made,” he said.

Even though most of the Hanks family work in the field of entertainment, Colin said in a 2019 interview with Us Weekly Magazine that both his daughters have no interest in following in his and his father’s footsteps. Although the dad of two said he kept telling the girls they could do whatever they wanted, he was more interested in seeing what the kids choose to do and “what they sort of gravitate toward.”

He added that Olivia and Charlotte are aware of how famous their family is, but Colin said they’re not that interested in show business.

“They’re aware of what he does for sure,” Colin said of what his kids thought of their grandpa. “It’s just the same way they’re aware of what their father does for a living, but they don’t have really much interest in it. ...  I mean, I wasn’t on Hannah Montana, so they don’t really have any interest in what I do,” he added.

Tom and Wilson appeared to be happy looking after their grandchildren, but Colin noted in a separate interview that he doesn’t like the way the couple handles situations with the little girls. In an interview with “The Today Show” in October 2022, Colin joked:

"It would be great if they paid attention to the kids’ bedtime, and actually cook food that the kids will eat.”

Colin later clarified that his parents are “fine” and “great” grandparents. He also added that his kids “get a lot of sugar” and do not necessarily follow a “schedule” when they spend time with their grandparents.
