When you think of a football player, there are probably several images that come to mind. Many of them probably involve brutal hits and earth-shattering tackles that you've seen every Sunday as you watch your favorite NFL team. There is often the perception of football players as strong, physical people who enjoy inflicting pain on the opposition. But in a beautiful act of kindness, 23-year-old Cleveland Browns safety Ronnie Harrison showed this September that we shouldn't restrict ourselves to thinking in stereotypes and clichés.
Much of this perception probably comes from the games we've seen where players celebrate after a big sack or a tackle. It is easy to forget that the men behind the facemasks are just regular people who have a great capacity to be kind. In a story that has gone viral, one such instance occurred to remind us of this fact.
We have all had days that we know are going to be awful. Often times there are catalysts to these days. Something pretty major will happen, and we will know that we probably shouldn't have gotten out of bed that morning. Even if his day had gotten off to a great start, Michael Cutlip, an Ohio resident, was set to experience a dramatic change in his circumstances.
WEWS reported that Cutlip was driving down Interstate 80 in Ohio in late September when his car experienced a tire blowout. According to Cutlip's interview with the outlet, the tire exploded and became separated from the wheel. It rolled off over the side of the road. The man got control of his vehicle and pulled over to the side of the road. Unfortunately, Cutlip didn't have a jack to put on a spare tire.

After Cutlip pulled over to the side of the road, he noticed a truck pull over as well. A man stepped out of the truck and approached him. He asked Cutlip if he was okay and inquired whether he had a jack. After finding out that Cutlip didn't have a jack, this hero went back to his pickup and got one.
Once this mysterious hero got the jack, he went to work on diligently changing Cutlip's tire. Obviously, Cutlip was quite interested in knowing all about who this person was that pulled over to help a complete stranger.
A Hero Revealed
As the man changed his tire, Cutlip noticed that his hero's truck had an out-of-state plate on it. Curious, the Ohio man asked this helpful individual what brought him to the state. The man replied that he had just got traded to the Cleveland Browns.
Little did Cutlip know that the person who was changing his tire was none other than Ronnie Harrison, the new safety for the Browns football team.
Soon, Harrison was done changing the tire. Cutlip expressed his gratitude, and the NFL player was on his way to wherever he was going before he stopped. What had been an awful experience was made okay because of the actions of this gridiron star.
Doing the Right Thing
When reached for comment about the situation, Harrison deflected any talk of his actions being anything other than ordinary. According to this NFL safety's interview with local News 5 Cleveland, he did what any other person should be doing for someone else in need. He further told the outlet that his upbringing had taught him to always be of assistance in any way he could. Essentially, he was just treating people the way he would want to be treated.
“That’s how my mom raised me. Be helpful, be kind to people, be respectful, help others, treat people the way you want to be treated—that’s what I always heard growing up,” Harrison told News 5 Cleveland. “It just goes to show a little goes a long way, just being kind to people, just being there to help others.”
This story reminds us that there are a lot of people in this world who won't hesitate to help someone in need. Despite all the negative stories floating about, it is good to know that there are still helpful people who care about others.
