Cillian Murphy is an Irish actor who developed an interest in acting in secondary school after participating in a drama module presented by Pat Kiernan, director of the Corcadorca Theatre Company. Cillian tried his hands at music in his late teens and early 20s, joining different bands to pursue what he felt was his calling. The actor also studied law at University College Cork (UCC) but realized his interests lay elsewhere.

Cillian began to utilize his acting talents when he joined UCC’s Drama Society and landed the lead role in a novice production of “Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme.” His acting career began in earnest with a professional stage production of Enda Walsh’sDisco Pigs,” where he played a volatile teenager.

Cillian also took part in many stage productions, including William Shakespeare’sMuch Ado About Nothing,” “The Country Boy” and “Juno and the Paycock.” He also appeared in a movie adaptation of “Disco Pigs,” where he played Pig. The 48-year-old moved to films in 1997 and has since appeared in films like “28 Days Later,” “Inception, “A Quiet Place Part II,” and the TV series, “Peaky Blinders,” which helped launch his career further.

Cillian first met Christopher Nolan in 2003 when he auditioned for the lead role in the “Dark Knight” series. Although he didn’t get the part, the duo began to work together in 2005 on the same series, with Cillian playing the corrupt Dr. Crane/Scarecrow. Since then, the pair have worked together on several films, including “Inception” and “Dunkirk.”

After landing his biggest role in “Oppenheimer,” Cillian’s life was turned upside down, and people became interested in his family. This led many to discover that one of his two sons followed his path into the arts and is pursuing a similar career in acting.

Cillian had always wanted to play the lead in one of Nolan’s movies, and his dream came true in October 2021 when he was offered the lead role in “Oppenheimer.” Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter that he picked Cillian after seeing J. Robert Oppenheimer’s biography.

“I’ve been staring at the cover of the book ‘American Prometheus’ for so many months, and there’s this photograph, black and white, a light blue-eyed stare, very intense, of this guy,” Nolan disclosed. And I thought, ‘Well, I know who could do that.’”

The role would blast Cillian’s career to greater heights. For his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in the titular film, he won a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and eventually, an Academy Award for Best Actor.

On many occasions during the 2024 awards show season, Cillian was accompanied by his wife, Irish visual artist Yvonne McGuinness. The longtime couple married in 2004 and have two sons born in 2005 and 2007. Their oldest, Malachy, is 19, while Aran is 17 and pursuing a career similar to his father’s.

Cillian and McGuinness decided to live together in London, but at some point, they decided to return to Ireland so their children could grow up there.

“It’s amazing how quickly their accents have adapted. Even within a year of moving back, they are fading into this rakish West Brit kind of thing. Which I think, hopefully, will get them lots of girls when they’re 15,” he told The Guardian

Cillian noticed that his boys became “more sure of themselves,” possessing the confidence he did not have at his age, making him “happy.”

Although Cillian’s sons believe that his movies were “really intense,” he has since gushed about the times he spends with them. He is also a spokesperson for a scheme pioneered by the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre at NUI Galway.

“Raising boys, it seems very practical and sensible that you would promote empathy. It’s about listening, and the best acting is about listening, too,” he said when talking about raising his children with empathy.

As he received recognition in “Oppenheimer,” Cillian never forgot to acknowledge his family.

“Cause I don’t ever really get to do this too often, I want to say thanks to my family,” Cillian told the crowd at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Awards. “Just thanks for putting up with me, putting up with kind of the half me and the shadow me and the absent me and the remains of me when I’m doing a film like this or work in general. You’re always there and I love you for it.”

His sons, Aran and Malachy, attended some of the events. This is especially meaningful for Aran because he’s pursuing a career in acting. When he was 11 years old, Aran played Shakespeare’s son, Hamnet, in the Irish Theatre Company production of the one-person show “Hamnet.”

“He was so chilled about it, you know? He would come off stage and ask what the score was in the Liverpool game. And, again, you’re slightly jealous of that! There’s the danger that overanalysing everything can erode the simplicity,” he said about Aran to The Guardian

At the 2024 Oscars, many took notice of the children’s similarities to their father, especially their very similar haircuts!

“The way Cillian Murphy and his sons all have the same haircut,” one said, while the other noted, “Cillian and Yvonne are blessed with two handsome boys. Oh, and an Oscar!!”
