Christopher Reeve Had Three Kids From Two Different Women — Meet Them & His Grandchildren

The enigmatic late actor Christoper Reeve is best remembered for his iconic role as Superman in the 1978 movie of the same name. Christopher's chiseled looks and wonderful acting led him to fame and a successful acting career. But unfortunately, it was abruptly cut short after a tragic accident during an equestrian competition. This accident left a 42-year-old Christopher a quadriplegic for the rest of his life.

However, with the support of his wife and family, Christopher returned to creative pursuits in his life and started a foundation that helped others with similar injuries and funded agencies that could find a cure for paralysis.

Christopher's personal life was just as rich as his professional one. He was together with Gae Exton for nine years and the couple had two children, Matthew Reeve and Alexandra Reeve Givens. Following their amicable breakup, Christopher met and eventually married Dana Reeve née Morosini, and together they had a son named William Reeve. Through his three children — and now their own children — Christopher's legacy lives on.

All three of Christopher's children are proud ambassadors of The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, and they often come together to support Christopher's vision of helping others with spinal cord injuries.

What's more, Matthew and Alexandra, who are Christopher's eldest two kids, have children of their own. Matthew has a son and daughter with his partner Anna Lo Westlin, while Alexandra has a son who she and her husband, Garren Givens, named in honor of their own fathers — Christopher Russel Reeve Givens. Let's meet Christopher's children and his grandkids.

Matthew, the eldest of Christopher's children with Exton, was born in London in 1979. His parents were together for nine years, during which time they also had a daughter, Alexandra. After they separated, Matthew and Alexandra were raised by their mother.

Matthew followed his father into show business, turning his focus on working behind the camera. He produced and directed "Christopher Reeve: Hope in Motion," an award-winning documentary about his father's life. Since then, he's continued working as a writer, director and producer on movies including "The Land That Never Was," "Hamilton," and "Second Strike," among others.

Matthew has a son and daughter with his partner and occasionally the couple posts special family moments on social media. In Dec. 2019, Westlin shared two posts  — one featured Matthew holding his son while another showed the family of four happy as can be as they posed in a photo booth.

In contrast to her brother, Alexandra is more private. Born in Dec. 1983, she is the CEO for the Center for Democracy & Technology and even serves as the Vice-Chairperson of the Reeve Foundation. Unlike her brothers, she doesn't work in show business and outside of her charitable work, she stays out of the public eye.

She's taken that approach with her son Christopher too, by not showing him on social media. Born on June 13, 2015, in Washington D.C., she and her husband named their firstborn after both of his grandfathers on each side. A representative for the couple told People that the two were "very important role models for Garren and Alexandra."

After splitting with Exton, Christopher met his future wife Dana, and the two eventually married despite the actor's hesitations after being a child of divorce. Together they had a son named William, who is the half-brother of Matthew and Alexandra.

Born on June 7, 1992, William is a fair bit younger than his elder siblings and at this point has no children of his own. He eventually followed both of his parents into showbiz where in recent years he's been starting to build a career in the sports news arena.

Tragically, however, he lost both of his parents before the age of 14. Christopher passed away in 2004 at the young age of 52 from an infection that spread from a bedsore, according to People. Meanwhile, Dana succumbed to lung cancer at the age of 44, despite never being a smoker.

After both Dana and Christopher passed away, People reports that William went to live with a childhood friend. Even though he had two older half-siblings, Dana wanted their son to remain in the community in which he had grown up, and she made arrangements for him to stay there after she passed away. Even though William lost both of his parents within 17 months of each other, he keeps their legacy alive by continuing the work with their foundation, alongside his elder brother and sister.

The foundation also continues to try and find a cure for spinal cord injuries and provide care for patients who are affected by paralysis. He said in a 2016 interview:

"I understand how important their story is to so many people, and, of course, it’s important to me and my family."

He added:

"I hope I make my parents proud. I try to do that every day and like to think they would be.”
