Christina Aguilera’s Childhood
Christina Maria Aguilera was born on December 18, 1980, in Staten Island, New York. She was born to a troubled family. Her father, a U.S. Army sergeant, used to mistreat her mother when Aguilera was very young.
When she turned 6, her mother got fed up and decided to end the marriage. She took Aguilera and went to live with her younger sister in Rochester, Pennsylvania. Due to this experience, Aguilera has always stood up against men in her life. She has always expressed that her father was dominant to her mother and that she would never allow any man to do the same to her. However, everything changed when she entered the music industry. Unfortunately, when she did, she didn’t find any strong women around her at the time. She had to rely on her own strength to grow
“When it comes to personal relationships, I made up my mind at a really young age that I had to do for myself. I never wanted a man to tell me what I could and couldn’t do, what I could and couldn’t spend, I always knew I had to be the queen of my castle,” she explained to Cosmopolitan. Of course, Aguilera showed interest in music when she was very young. As a violinist and pianist, her mom, Shelly Loraine Fidler, may have influenced this interest in music. However, Aguilera is said to have participated in local talent shows even while in elementary school.
Christina Aguilera Starts Her Career
Aguilera found herself on the national television show “Star Search” when she was 9 years old. She performed a cover of “A Sunday Kind of Love” by Etta James and came in second in the competition. A few years later, she participated in “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club” as Mouseketeer alongside Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, and other future stars. Two years after the show, Aguilera moved with her mother to Japan. She recorded “All I Wanna Do,” alongside Keizo Nakanishi, a celebrated Japanese pop star. The single became a huge hit instantly.
Although she was only a child, Aguilera knew that she was on her way to music success, and she worked hard to establish herself as a serious artist. After making a couple more recordings in Japan, Aguilera’s career moved faster than anyone would have expected. She worked on the soundtrack for the Disney animated film “Mulan” before being signed by RCA records. After the signing, she released her first album in 1999 called “Christina Aguilera.” Featuring songs like “Genie in a Bottle,” the album sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. One year later, Aguilera won a Grammy award for Best New Artist.
Heavy Criticism
Just like her teen counterparts, including Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, Aguilera wanted to do things differently, and she did. In 2002, she rose further by making a classic cover of the popular “Lady Marmalade” alongside P!nk, Mya, and Lil' Kim. This was indeed her turning point, and anyone would have agreed that Aguilera had become a woman.
“I was feeling a sense of rebellion,” she said. “Freed from the formulaic experience, I just threw out anything I felt was a little plastic or a little stale or was eating me up with superficiality.”
Although “Dirrty,” a major song on her fourth studio album “Stripped,” became a big hit, many people criticized her for it. Recalling her role as “Mouseketeer,” audiences did not consider it appropriate for her to sing as she did. In fact, many critics compared her to a hooker. Her “Dirrty” video was even spoofed with reproving words like “whore” on “Saturday Night Live.”
Christina Aguilera Got Hurt
While speaking to Cosmopolitan, the star spoke of how the male music executives refused to leave the room when she had wardrobe fittings. Moreover, people would say nasty things about women’s bodies without minding the fact that she was seated with them. She continued, “It’s hard to hear yourself being called names. I remember being hurt by these commercials on MTV, pitting Britney as the good girl and me as the bad girl. It’s like, if I’m going to be demure and innocent, that’s OK. But if I’m going to just be myself, I’m trouble.”
According to her, the main issue was how men were trying to determine what beauty for women meant. She has said, “I love the female body, and I think it’s something to be proud of, not something that men should dictate ownership of...Dirrty was extremely controversial at the time, but it would be nothing now. I hope I paved the way and helped set the ground rules that women can be any version of themselves they wanna be, and proud of it.”
Of course, the pop star was not about to apologize for being who she was.
Winning A Grammy
In 2002, Aguilera released her album “Stripped.” She was now adorned with tattoos and piercings on album covers, wore more revealing clothing, and seemed not to care what people would think. “I knew it was a bold move, and I knew a lot of people would not be ready for it,” Aguilera told The New York Times regarding “Dirrty.” “The great thing is that everyone, whether you loved it or hated it, had an opinion of the song, and everybody talked about it.”
Besides “Dirrty,” the album featured other smash hits, including “Makeover” and “Beautiful.” The latter won her the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award after she got nominated for four Grammys. Since then, Aguilera has released three albums. The latest one, “Liberation,” was released in 2018.
Besides music, Aguilera has been involved in other areas within the entertainment industry. She starred alongside Cher in “Burlesque,” the musical, and wrote a song for the film titled “Show Me How You Burlesque.” Moreover, the music icon has been working as a coach on “The Voice.”
Christina Aguilera’s Family
Aguilera married a music producer named Jordan Bratman in 2005, and three years later, they had a baby boy, Max Liron. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out very well for them, so they divorced in 2011. Before long, Aguilera fell in love with another man, Matthew Rutler, and they got engaged in 2014. They were blessed with a baby girl, who they named Summer Rain, the same year. At first, the couple wanted a conventional name for their daughter but then changed their minds when she came into the world.
“Summer is a time of spreading warmth and light,” Aguilera told People. “While rain washes away...replenishes and brings new life to allow growth and new beginnings. I wanted her name to be filled with inspiration, love and joy. And that’s exactly what she brings to all who encounter her.”
Christina Aguilera’s Anxiety Struggles
Everyone has their deeper issues, ones that they don’t share with anybody, and Aguilera is no different. The celebrity has had her own fair share of anxiety issues over the years. She has had to find ways to adapt to make it through the difficult times. Aguilera admitted to having struggled with anxiety while speaking with L’Officiel Italia but noted that she has been able to embrace her body despite the emotional challenge. She said, “True beauty for me is the ability to know you and project what you are in an unmistakable light. Not always pretty, far from perfect, but pure.”
The pop icon also empathized with other people undergoing body image issues or anxiety and offered them a piece of advice: “Be kind to yourself. We are all walking on the path of inner research, it is our work as human beings and each one follows a different path, so it makes no sense to make comparisons, ‘Swim in your lane. If you waste time looking over your shoulder to see what others are doing, you lose sight of it,’ is the best advice I’ve ever been given.”
Although not many people know about it, Aguilera has gone through a rough weight roller coaster over the years while trying to manage her anxiety.
Christina Aguilera’s Weight Loss
According to US Magazine, Aguilera went on a diet in 2013. Sometime after, she revealed her successful weight loss and amazing figure during a press event. She had started to exercise more often; it was a sort of mind-body thing for her. She talked about personal acceptance and how important it is to be confident in oneself, as people are different, as are perspectives.
“I don’t weigh myself...What looks good on one person might not look good on another body type,” Aguilera said in a Marie Claire interview. “I happen to be very confident in my own skin. It takes time to get to that place, but it’s all about embracing yourself and your body type.”
Today, you’ll find many recent pictures of her on her Instagram page. The woman looks incredibly stunning. “I’m not going on a diet, get over it. Each of us is an individual and people judge you based on your differences, on what makes you unique,” she said to L’Officiel Italia. “You have to accept that beauty and to hell with everything else.”
