Chrissy Teigen Reveals Way She And Meghan Markle Bonded Over Pregnancy Loss

Apr 23, 2021 by apost team

On an April 2021 episode of “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” American model Chrissy Teigen, 35, opened up about how she connected with Meghan Markle, 39, over their shared experience of having miscarriages. Teigen, who is married to the musician John Legend, wrote publicly about the pain that goes along with having a miscarriage in October 2020. The model posted a photo of herself crying at the hospital alongside an intimate description of her feelings after losing their third child, a boy they had named Jack. Similarly, Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, wrote a November 2020 opinion piece for The New York Times titled “The Loses We Share” about losing what would have been her second child in a miscarriage. In the recent interview with Cohen, Teigen revealed that Markle had written to her directly about her loss, which allowed the two to connect.

Both women have since been commended for sharing their experiences publicly, especially since some mothers feel shame after losing a child. In fact, Markle specifically speaks to the taboo and stigma that surrounds having a miscarriage in her essay. Parents and prospective parents from around the world took to social media to praise the two women — and both Teigen and Markle have continued to talk about their miscarriages openly.

Teigen and Legend have two children: a 5-year-old daughter, Luna, and a 2-year-old son, Miles. Markle and Prince Harry have only one child, the 1-year-old Archie, who is seventh in line for the British throne. However, Markle and her husband recently announced that a second is on the way.

Teigen spoke to her newfound friendship with Markle on the show from her home via video call.

"She had written to me about baby Jack, and loss," Teigen told Cohen in the interview, which has since been uploaded to YouTube. "She is really wonderful, and so kind — just as kind as everyone says she is."

"That's why you look at everything, and you're like, 'My god, what is absolutely wrong with people that they have to make this person out to be so malicious or so crazy, when it's just as simple as them being as kind as everybody says they are,'" she added.

Teigen also addressed the recent controversy connected with Markle and her husband’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in which they criticized British royalty and the institution’s culture.

"I think she's been very open about what she's been open with," Teigen said with regards to the interview. "And I think her truth has been her truth since the very beginning."

As Buzzfeed News reports, Teigen has publicly defended Markle in the past, criticizing the negative press surrounding the Times op-ed and the Winfrey interview on Twitter. The model has a significant base of fans on the social media platform, with more than 13 million followers. Teigen’s use of her massive social media following is significant, for it was on Instagram where Teigen first opened up about her miscarriage.

“We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital,” Teigen wrote alongside the Oct. 1 2020 post.

“But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”

“We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we’ve been able to experience. But everyday can’t be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it,” Teigen added.

Around two months later, the Times published Markle’s piece in print. Soon after it was posted on the website, it soon became the publication’s most popular post, according to USA Today.

“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few. In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage,” Markle wrote. “Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning.”

On Valentine’s Day 2021, Markle and husband Harry, 36, announced that they were expecting another child, according to Elle. A month later, during the couple’s controversial interview with Winfrey, Markle told viewers that they were expecting a girl. Markle is expecting to have the baby sometime in the summer. The child will be the couple’s second, joining 1-year-old Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Due to Markle’s pregnancy, she was unable to join the royal family for Prince Philip’s funeral, as doctors said that travel was too risky for the pregnant mother.
