One film of an adorable chimpanzee is going viral. The newborn chimpanzee is from a species that is nearly extinct.

The footage of the cuddly primate was captured at a nature reserve in Spain.

Coco Joins The Nature Reserve

After his birth, the baby primate was named Coco. He is a West African chimpanzee and one of the few left in the entire world. Coco was named after a famous chimpanzee in Valencia who lived at the Vivero zoo for 27 years. Unfortunately, his namesake passed away in 2005.

Currently, Coco lives in Valencia's Bioparc nature reserve. Because of his birth, there are now six of his species at Bioparc. His parents were the 30-year-old Moreno and 11-year-old Noelia. The other members of his troop are all females between the ages of 15 and 28.

While Moreno and Noelia had never had children before, they turned out to be loving parents. Staff members at the nature reserve watched the doting parents care for their newborn.

Around the world, conservationists celebrated the birth of Coco. His birth represents the bio-diversity of the world as well as a need to save animal species from extinction.

Coco's birth may be one small step toward combating extinction, but most people care more about just how adorable he is. The video shows the little chimpanzee playing and cuddling with his parents. He also seems to get along well with the other members of the chimpanzee troop. It seems like his birth has even brought the troop closer together.

Western Chimpanzees Are Struggling Against Extinction

Currently, Coco's species is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This means that his fellow chimps are considered critically endangered. In the last 30 years, this species has declined by 66 percent. In nature, it is only found in tropical regions of Africa. With any luck, Coco's birth will be the first of many births for the species.
