Farming is one of the most physically demanding and stressful jobs. As a farmer, you spend many long hours doing hard manual labor outdoors regardless of the weather conditions.
Despite your hard work, there are no guarantees that you will produce a reasonable crop and be able to feed your family in the months ahead.
As challenging as farming can be, these challenges only scratch the surface for Chris Koch.
Chris was born without legs or hands, so even basic tasks that many of us take for granted are incredibly challenging to him. For example, it may take Chris up to 400 percent more energy to do something simple like brushing his teeth than it would take us.
With this in mind, it may seem like a physically demanding job like farming would be out of the question for Chris. However, Chris is a happy, active farmer at Apricot Lane Farms.

When an infant is born with a severe disability like Chris was born with, it is understandable for a family to be saddened and stressed. However, Chris’ grandmother set the tone for the rest of his life with a quick-witted joke.
She quipped that his father never did finish anything he started. This dry sense of humor and the normalization of the disability gave Chris the foundation to simply accept his capabilities and limitations.
According to the Oprah Winfrey Network, Chris cannot legally drive in Alberta, but he has driven a tractor unassisted since he was 9 years old. He has become very independent and even manages to complete a substantial amount of farmhand work without using his prosthetic limbs.
