Among the many tributes that poured in, one of the most heartfelt came from legendary singer and actress Cher, who shared a deep and enduring bond with Val over four decades. After meeting at a birthday party, the singer and Val had a two-year relationship in the early ’80s. Cher took to X to pay tribute to her ex-boyfriend Val after his passing, calling him a “great friend.

“VALUS,” the “Believe” singer wrote, using her nickname for the actor. She continued, “Will miss u,U Were Funny, crazy, pain in the a**,GREAT FRIEND, kids💜U, BRILLIANT as Mark Twain, BRAVE  here during ur sickness.”

Cher and Val created a stir when they got together, not least because of their 13-year age gap. Though Cher was 36 years old at the time and Val was in his 20s, their relationship was still happy. The actress had previously discussed their initial meeting and what drew them to one another.

“He’d tell me about his dreams,” Cher recalled their first conversations. “He took me to a Japanese performance of Macbeth and I was thinking, ‘This guy is nuts, we’re not going to get along at all.’ He was so young. Was he 22? What was I? I don’t know. Thirty something. It was a bigger deal back then.”

She revealed that they started as friends but soon found themselves madly in love with each other, turning their friendship into a romantic relationship.

“We became friends because we laughed at the same things constantly.” She also admitted that “he would sleep over and it was just a friendship.”

According to Cher, their love gradually turned into mutual respect and acceptance. The actress said:

“It went from madly in love and laughing hysterically to respecting each other’s ability.”

However, she also revealed that their strong, sometimes conflicting personalities ultimately led to the breakdown of their relationship.

“We had unbelievable times and then put up with some times when they weren’t because we were both Alpha males,” she said.

It’s still remarkable that they remained friends decades after their relationship and breakup. Cher has admitted that she doesn’t fully understand how they pulled off this feat.

“I don’t know how we stayed friends, we just did. We didn’t try. We just were.”
