For many couples, intimate getaways with their special someone — whether it’s their partner or spouse — are always special. For some, planning this special trip is an escape from one’s rather busy and complicated life. However, a couple who took their dilemmas to Reddit reassessed their feelings for each other after hearing honest opinions from people online.

A repost on Reddit's Best of Redditor Updates featured two posts from a bickering couple. In the first post, the husband shared his recollection of a recent encounter with his wife. It turns out that the wife had taken to Reddit first to ask people for their thoughts on why her husband didn’t want to go with her on the anniversary trip she planned for them.

“She posted about me not wanting to go on an anniversary trip that she had planned, she showed me the responses and some said I was 'checked out' of the marriage. a lot of them also said just to book the trip anyways and I’d get over it,” the husband wrote on his post. “After she showed me the responses we tried to talk it out, but she was mad that I couldn’t give her a valid reason for not wanting to go.” He added, "I kind of thought she’d eventually get over it and forget about the trip."

However, the wife heeded the advice of many and booked a week-long trip to the Caribbean, and she had planned for one of her male co-workers to come with her.

“I asked her if anything was going on between them and she said no. I had no reason to believe she would cheat on me until today, which is is clearly going to do if goes to a resort with him. She’s a good looking women (sic) but has been very loyal for the last 10 years. I am shocked. What should I do? How can I fix this? She thought I was checked out of the marriage but it’s clear she’s the one giving up,” the husband went on.

In the same repost the wife took to Reddit again after reading her husband’s post. She then clarified that the male co-worker who was coming with her on the trip was gay and was even planning to get married on the island the following year.

“He paid his own way and is only going because none of my friends could go (mom life) and he wanted to check out the island as he is getting married there next fall. My husband doesn’t want me travelling with 'some guy he never met,' but none of my girlfriends could go and I didn’t want to go alone,” the wife elaborated.

The wife also further explained that she wanted to go on a getaway because she believed she deserved it after having two kids, surviving a pandemic, and getting promoted to an executive-level job.

People on Reddit were on the wife’s side, even urging her to leave her husband after he refused to join her on the trip.

“With all due respect, the only thing embarrassing about this is that you’re planning to continue this relationship AS IT IS and don’t to be able to see the red flags that are covered in glitter and flashing strobe lights, RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU,” a Redditor said

“So what does the husband bring to the marriage? Because it sounds like his wife is doing all the emotional labor and planning here,” a user wondered.

“The fact that she arranged childcare for a trip her husband is not joining her on says a lot about who is checked out of the family and marriage,” another echoed
