Caitlyn Jenner is among the celebrities that many know for different reasons. Some were introduced to Jenner in the 1970s in the world of sports, where she represented the United States at the Olympics and is a retired Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete. At the Montreal Olympics in 1976, Jenner set a third successive world record and became celebrated as a great athlete. For others, the world of reality television led to them discovering Jenner, particularly in the hit reality series, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.”
It's now been around 10 years since Jenner publicly came out as a transgender woman and changed her name. Since then, the Olympic icon has transitioned into her genuine self and given up her life as her old self. Jenner is one of the most famous transgender people, and there are still many things people don’t know about the Olympic icon turned reality star. Born Bruce Jenner, the star paid tribute to her old self, saying:
“I had a life for 65 years. OK?” Besides which, “I liked Bruce. He was a good person. He did a lot in his life. Oh, ‘he didn’t even exist’. Yes he did exist! He worked his butt off. He won the (Olympic) Games. He raised amazing kids. He did a lot of very, very good things and it’s not like I just want to throw that away.”
“It was hard giving old Bruce up, in a lot of ways,” Jenner added. “He still lives inside me. I still do a lot of the things old Bruce used to do. I still fly airplanes and go race cars once in a while. I can have the best of both worlds.”
Jenner turned 75 in 2024, and has become a FOX News contributor and New York Times bestselling author. However, Jenner’s journey to self-acceptance wasn’t an easy one as she struggled with her gender identity from a young age and only transitioned when she was 65. Reflecting on her struggles with her body, she shared her story with Diane Sawyer on ABC in an exclusive interview.
“I would say I’ve always been confused with my gender identity since I was (small)... Bruce lives a lie, she is not a lie. I can’t do it anymore,” she said.
Jenner revealed she started wearing women’s dresses at age 8 or 9, sneaking into her mother’s and sisters’ closets to try on their clothes. Although she couldn’t understand the urge to wear women’s dresses at the time, she did recognize that she felt good when she did.
“I marked the closet so when I put it back I could put it all back, everything back in the exact same spot so I wouldn’t get caught,” Jenner added. “And, at the time, I didn’t know why I was doing it besides it just made me feel good.”
Even in high school, Jenner struggled with her gender identity, mainly when other young people surrounded her.
“I look at guys and I go...‘He’s comfortable in his own skin,’” Jenner said. “And I thought, ‘Wouldn’t that be a nice way to go through life?’ I look at women all the time thinking, ‘Oh my God, how lucky are they that they can wake up in the morning and be themselves. But me, I’m stuck here in the middle.”
Despite transitioning into a woman, the star revealed her children still call her “dad,” adding, “I will be their father until the day they die or I die.”
