There is no ideal costume or outfit for wedding ceremonies. However, wedding guests always go the extra mile to look great for the occasion. Thus, a wedding ceremony can be likened to a fashion event of some sort as guests wear different outfits in different colors that come together to make the occasion even more memorable. In some cultures, the bride and groom ask their guests to wear a particular color or dress type to fit a particular theme while others allow their guests to wear whatever color or outfit they want.
Whatever the case may be, guests owe it to the couple and to themselves to look good and wear outfits that won’t cause controversy or raise eyebrows. Couples could get upset if they find a wedding guest wearing an outfit they find offensive. It may even be worse if the guest that causes offense is a family member. Well, that was exactly the case for a bride who felt upset after her brother, seemingly a fan of Jack Sparrow and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” turned up for her wedding in a pirate costume.
The enraged bride took to Reddit on June 3, 2023, to share her story with the platform’s users. In her story, she wondered if she was wrong for asking her brother not to wear a pirate costume to her wedding and then getting annoyed when he did it anyway. Many Redditors commented on the woman’s story and shared their different views on her brother’s behavior. Continue reading for more on the woman’s story and Redditors’ reactions to it.
“Pirates of the Caribbean” is one of the most famous movie series of the 21st century. The franchise starred Johnny Depp as the mischievous Captain Jack Sparrow. The film series launched in 2003 with “The Curse of the Black Pearl.” In the first installment, fans were introduced to Captain Jack Sparrow and his pirate friends as they went from one mishap to another in their quest to find treasure. Following the first installment’s success and fans’ love for the beloved Jack Sparrow, brought to life by Depp’s incredible acting, Walt Disney Pictures announced that more installments would follow.
The motion picture company kept its promise and released four more installments in the years that followed. The second movie in the franchise was “Dead Man’s Chest,” which was released in 2006. In 2007, the third installment, “At World’s End,” was released. It took another four years before another installment, “On Stranger Tides,” was released. Six years later, the film’s fifth installment, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” was released.
All of the franchise’s movies have done well at the Box Office, achieving over $4.5 billion in earnings worldwide, making it the 15th-highest-grossing movie franchise of all time. Depp is undoubtedly the franchise’s biggest star but many other notable names have starred in the film series. These include Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin McNally, Jack Davenport, Bill Nighy, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and many more.
Besides earning a huge amount of revenue throughout the years, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise also gained a massive fanbase. Captain Jack Sparrow remains a huge fan attraction to this day, so much so that one of the character’s biggest fans wore his costume to a wedding ceremony. However, it was a decision that didn’t go down well with the bride.

On June 3, 2023, a Redditor with the username floof-monstro detailed her wedding experience. In the post, the woman narrated how her brother’s wife called her to tell her about the wedding gift they were getting for her. Afterward, the woman’s sister-in-law also told her:
“Oh and BTW, since you’re having a yacht wedding, Greg (the woman’s brother) will be wearing a pirate costume.”
However, the bride said no to her brother wearing a pirate costume to her wedding. Despite her refusal, Greg still turned up for her wedding donning a Jack Sparrow costume. The woman wasn’t thrilled by her brother’s action and was visibly upset on her wedding day. One of her new relatives felt she was being uptight and said Greg’s costume was funny. However, the bride didn’t bother to respond.
The annoyed bride added that she was worried she was too sensitive and uptight when it came to her family members and how she sometimes felt "disrespected" by them. She also wished she could lighten up and explained:
“I’m the youngest in a big family where they’ve always expected me to be ok with all of my stuff being treated as a joke, whereas their stuff is sacred.”
Other Redditors commented on the woman’s story with most of them concluding that her brother was wrong. One of the commenters said:
“NTA. I would be so hurt if a close member of my family thought so little of me as to do this. I’m so upset that nobody pushed him into the sea.”
Another person said the woman should have left her brother stranded on an empty island while a third advised:
