At one point during his career, actor Brendan Fraser was on top of the world, starring in movie after movie. Some of his most notable roles included portraying Rick O’Connell in “The Mummy” film series, as well as leading roles in “George of the Jungle” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”

After taking a hiatus from acting in films, Fraser moved to television and was met with a new wave of fans and success. “The Affair” and “Texas Rising” were some of his most popular television roles. Fraser also worked on the action series “Doom Patrol.”

Now, the actor has continued to make a name for himself once again in the entertainment industry by landing a handful of new roles. However, many fans were left to wonder what was the reason why Fraser seemed to almost disappear from the spotlight altogether despite being such a well-loved and respected star.

Over the years, the actor has given some insight into the troubles he faced during his rise to stardom and the physical, mental and emotional toll the industry left on him. Fortunately, he has continued to overcome the past and grow from the hardships he faced and is making his way back to being one of the more prominent names in Hollywood once again. With many films in production, there’s no doubt we’ll keep seeing Fraser on the big screen.

On March 12, 2023, Fraser cemented his return to the A-list by winning the Best Actor award at the Oscars. The big win is a milestone and one that marks a new chapter in his career. The actor has had the support of his family along the way, including his three sons, two of whom joined him on the Oscars' champagne carpet and spoke of how proud they were of their father.

Fraser has been on an epic comeback, undergoing more transformations in recent years and proving that it’s never too late to live out your wildest dreams.

During the late 1990s and 2000s, Fraser was a highly sought-after and respected actor. He had leading roles in “George of the Jungle” in 1997 and “The Mummy” in 1999 and was loved and adored by fans and professionals in the entertainment industry. Unfortunately, Fraser’s career and activity in the public eye trailed off for a bit in the 2010s.

Speaking with GQ Magazine in February 2018, Fraser opened up about some of the hardships he faced over the years. According to The Straits Times, the actor spoke out about how the extreme and physically demanding roles he used to play during the late 1990s and early 2000s really took a toll on his body, especially since he did his own stunts.

Fraser spent seven years in and out of hospitals for various operations, including a partial knee replacement, vocal cord repair work and a lumbar laminectomy – a back procedure to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.

“By the time I did the third ‘Mummy’ picture in China, I was put together with tape and ice – I was building an exoskeleton for myself daily,” Fraser told GQ.

However, in his resurgence, Fraser appears to be transforming himself once again, as he's taken on roles with a different look in the last years. In 2021 he starred in “No Sudden Move,” while he purposely gained weight for his 2022 film “The Whale," in which he plays a morbidly obese recluse who wants to reconnect with his teenage daughter in a last bid attempt at redemption.

Just like his character, Fraser has undergone his own redemption in Hollywood, as he was nominated for most of the major acting awards, and had multiple wins, including the elusive Oscar.

As he walked the champagne carpet on Sunday, March 12, 2023, Fraser looked incredibly proud of his achievements. Speaking with Laverne Cox for E! News, the actor likened his redemption arc in Hollywood with his character Charlie in "The Whale."

"I share it with this character and I feel like there are those who've seen this film and they can identify with the struggles that this man goes through, you're not alone," he said.

He spoke of the "good news" that the number of people asking for help at the Obesity Action Coalition has gone up. "It's doing some good," he said.

Fraser brought his girlfriend Jeanne Moore to the awards show, as well as two of his three sons. Fraser shares Griffin, 20, Holden, 18, and Leland, 16, with his ex-wife Afton Smith, but only his two youngest came out that night. When Cox asked how proud they were of their father, Holden said: "We are unbelievably proud. Over the moon," as Leland echoed his sentiments.

Fraser took home the Best Actor award that night and received a standing ovation from his fellow industry professionals. The actor's sons were alongside him every step of the way, and they even made his Oscar nomination more memorable than it already was. Fraser told Extra his reaction was, "Astonishment and surprise, because my kids surprised me with cake and balloons." He said they snuck into his house, "they had a plan." The deserving actor added another memorable aspect of his nomination:

"That and the feeling that sharing that moment with my loved ones is now a core memory of mine."

Fraser shared in a 2018 GQ interview that his sons visit him "all the time."
