Brave Couple Saved Babies In Burning Nursery During Their Honeymoon

Every couple dreams of having the perfect wedding, including the much-anticipated vacation to celebrate the marriage of the newlyweds – the honeymoon. It also makes for the perfect time to see some of the most beautiful destinations one can dream of. That's why it really takes a lot of time and preparation to make a honeymoon happen. But sometimes, people encounter unexpected things along the way. But as they, things happen for a reason.

Couple Doran Smith and David Squillante waited two years for their honeymoon. Sadly, they couldn't push through with their original plan to go on a honeymoon after their wedding in October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted tourist travel across the globe. But when they finally had the chance to go on their honeymoon, they did so and traveled all the way to Spain in September 2022. 

The couple revealed that they were on their way to tour a park, with their phones in their hands taking videos when, to their surprise, they saw a group of women panicking.

Recalling their experience, Smith told NBC 10 News: "I saw a flame coming out of the doorway, next to the door that these women had come out of," Smith said. "So, I said 'Oh my God there's a fire.'"

Then, they realized there was a fire.

Squillante then immediately ran towards a building without any hesitation. But it was only when he got inside that he realized that it was a nursery he went into.

"Instinct took over," he remarked. "I found myself looking at 15, 20 babies sleeping, and immediately just kind of lined everyone up and we started grabbing them, putting them into the crib," he said.

Squillante also realized no one spoke English in the building. But what he did was he grabbed every single child he could and put them in a crib. Then, it became a team effort as he rolled the crib in the entryway of the building where Smith was. Smith, on the other hand, pushed the cribs to the other side of the street to get the babies to safety, away from the fire.

"It was like probably like ten minutes, but it seemed like an instant, but it turned out to be OK," he said.

While Squillante didn't speak fluent Spanish, he made sure to calm down the nursery workers while he was busy saving the children. He uttered the words 'Tranquilo' repeatedly.

Thankfully, other people who witnessed what was happening followed suit and started grabbing the rest of the children in the nursery.

"We couldn't speak the language, but there was a universal language — we were all just trying to help," Smith told the Boston Globe.

Following the incident, the couple went on with their day and pushed through with their tour – even though they were an hour late. But then, the couple said in the same interview that it eventually flashed across their minds that they had indeed saved the lives of several children.

"We looked at each other and said, remember that time we saved a bunch of babies?" Smith said.

"It felt like we watched it in a movie," Squillante said.

"It just didn't feel real."

While the couple's honeymoon wasn't the one they had expected, it will surely be one for the books. Plus, the children will definitely forever be grateful for them. Real-life heroes, indeed!
