Born Sally Lowenthal on February 25, 1935, in Easton, Pennsylvania, Sally Jessy Raphael is an American television host most popularly known for her long-running talk show, "The Sally Jessy Raphael Show."

In the 1960s, Raphael started her long and illustrious career as a radio DJ and a news reporter. However, it was not until she became a television show host in 1983 that she became one of the pioneers of daytime television. In the same year, “The Sally Jessy Raphael Show” gained significant popularity because of its tabloid-style format, where Raphael discussed various topics, including the personal relationships of other celebrities and other interesting topics.

Raphael is credited with introducing the idea of interacting with studio audiences during the show as she discusses the topic. She was known for ruling the airwaves, paving the way for women in show business. Oprah Winfrey’s iconic “The Oprah Winfrey Show” was launched three years later.

Throughout the show's run, which ended in 2000, Raphael interviewed many personalities, but in an interview with The Daily Mail, she revealed that the late Audrey Hepburn was her favorite. In 1990, the show won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series after receiving significant fanfare and popularity among its viewers.

Raphael is known for her distinctive red glasses and no-nonsense demeanor. Even after the show ended in 2002, Raphael remained popular in the talk show scene. Though she made fewer appearances in Hollywood over the years, many still remember her impact.

However, in July 2024, Raphael took to her Instagram account and complained that the social media platform was not recognizing her as a celebrity's official account. Keep reading to learn more about Raphael’s woes.

In a 2019 interview with The Daily Mail, Raphael revealed that she had to fight the management to wear her now-iconic red glasses during her time on the show.

“I had to fight to have the glasses. Producers tried to change them. Those shadowy figures objected to everything,” Raphael confirmed.

In 2019, Raphael confessed that she does not miss the daily grind of hosting a talk show. The beloved talk show host said that her greatest accomplishment in her career was delivering the show for nearly 20 years, and what kept her going back then was “an insane desire to provide,” which, sadly, she does not have now.

Raphael has since been staying in Upstate New York. She was married to Karl Soderlund for 57 years until he died in 2020. They have one adopted son, Jason, and three foster children.

The host has been active on her social media accounts, specifically Instagram. On July 27, Raphael took to her account and complained about why Instagram had not verified her account as official.

“So, @Instagram doesn’t seem to want to give me my blue check - no matter what proof I send them! 😡🤯 AND there’s a fake account called “realsallyjr” and that’s NOT ME!” Raphael wrote, before pleading her fans for help. “Help me let instagram know, so we can fix this!”

Fans were upset in the comments and bewildered as to why the platform hasn’t recognized Raphael

“That’s pretty crazy that someone as famous as you are is having trouble with being recognized. I’m trying to understand what the issue is though,” one fan wrote.

“@instagram put some respect to her name. She’s an icon,” another fan commented.

“@instagram The Icon, the Legend of daytime TV, Ms. Sally Jessy Raphael needs her Blue Check Mark 💙 Hello!!!!!” a third person said.
