Margot Robbie has risen to become one of Hollywood’s most talented and sought-after actresses. Born on July 2, 1990, in Dalby, Queensland, Australia, Robbie’s journey toward stardom began in a humble setting. Raised by her single mother, Sarie Kessler, she developed a love for acting in her younger years. Her determination and passion led her to relocate to Melbourne, where she juggled part-time jobs while attending auditions.
The breakthrough came when Robbie secured a role in the Australian soap opera “Neighbours” in 2008. The show’s popularity allowed Robbie to gain recognition within the country and served as a stepping stone for her future success. However, it was clear that she was destined for bigger things, and she set her sights on conquering the international stage.
In 2011, Margot made the life-changing decision to move to the United States. Despite the initial challenges of starting afresh in a foreign land, her determination remained unwavering. Her first major Hollywood role came in 2013 when she starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s critically acclaimed film, “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Her remarkable performance as Naomi Lapaglia garnered widespread praise, and it was evident that a new star had arrived in Hollywood.
From that point on, Robbie’s career soared to new heights. Directors and producers were captivated by her ability to seamlessly adapt to any role she was given. She showcased her versatility in movies like “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Suicide Squad,” “Bombshell” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” earning accolades and award nominations along the way.
Robbie snagged the lead role in 2023’s summer blockbuster “Barbie” opposite bona fide Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling. However, the star admitted to being disappointed by one minor aspect of the film.
“Barbie” is a fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig and written by her and her husband, Noah Baumbach. The movie, which is based on Mattel’s Barbie fashion dolls, is the first live-action Barbie film after several animated versions.
The film features a star-studded cast, including Robbie as Barbie and Gosling as Ken. Other cast members that appear in the movie include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Helen Mirren and Will Ferrell.
“Barbie” follows Barbie and Ken on their journey to self-discovery following Barbie’s existential crisis. The film is nothing like any of the other CGI animated versions that were earlier released. It is progressive, portraying a matriarchal society where all women are self-confident, self-sufficient and successful. While their male counterparts spend most of their time engaging in recreational activities, the Barbies hold on to important job positions. They are decision-makers like lawyers, politicians and doctors in the Barbie verse.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the initial title of the movie had been “Barbie and Ken.” However, when Gosling received the script, Ken had been crossed off. According to Gerwig, having Ken become the emotional center of the film was no accident.
“There was something really early when Noah and I were working on it — Ken as an accessory and how forgotten he is — we just felt, psychologically: That’s going to be the story. There’s (a) story there. How could there not be?” she said.
Gosling’s portrayal of the oft-neglected male doll in “Barbie” has received glowing reviews, with critics lauding his comedic talents as well as the “palpable rawness.” Despite this, there was one thing Gosling didn’t get to do as Ken that left his co-star Robbie thoroughly unsatisfied.

It’s no secret that Gosling ranks in the upper echelons of Hollywood’s dreamiest leading men. With suave roles in films such as “Crazy Stupid Love,” where Emma Stone’s character even remarks to him at one point, “It’s like your Photoshopped!” Gosling has sealed his status as one of the world’s most charismatic and desirable actors.
So it comes as no surprise that, when asked by People Magazine if she was happy the “Barbie” movie didn’t call for a kiss between her character and Gosling’s, Robbie laughed and said, “Uh no!”
“That didn’t feel like a win for me… I was like, ‘I know, I can’t check that one off (my list),’” she remarked.
Upon learning Robbie does not, in fact, smooch one of the hottest stars on the planet in “Barbie,” her friends were also equally dismayed.
“All of my girlfriends were like, ‘Well you did a whole movie with him and you don’t kiss? What’s wrong with you? I thought you were kind of in charge on this one!’” Robbie recalled.
LuckyChap Entertainment, Robbie’s production company co-founded with her husband Tom Ackerley, produced “Barbie.” The film broke the box office record for a female-directed film when it raked in a whopping $155 million in its opening hours.
Meanwhile, Gosling also touched on the lack of canoodling in “Barbie.” His sentiments veered in the opposite direction of Robbie’s, and he instead praised the filmmakers for the way they handled the awkward and almost juvenile romance between his and Robbie’s character.
“It was so funny trying to figure out what their idea of kissing might be,” he said in the same interview with Robbie. “I’m so glad all of that got cut out.”
