Aretha Franklin passed away last year and we lost a phenomenal singing talent. Unfortunately, in the year since her death, there has been a battle over her estate and holdings.

One very high profile individual is hoping to obtain one of the items that are part of that collection; Barack Obama has reportedly put in a request for Aretha’s hat that she wore at the 2009 presidential inauguration.

Franklin’s family is in contention over whether several handwritten pages found in her home constitutes as a formal will. While her children are dividing up the estate as well as personal items in court, Barack Obama has thrown his name in to receive the very important keepsake, reports The New York Times.

Aretha Franklin famously sang “My Country, ’Tis of Thee” in a grey ensemble at the 2009 presidential inauguration. The silver pillbox hat she matched with the outfit was a talking point for the entire country in the days after the event. Page Six reports that it was designed by Luke Song of Mr. Song Millinery, who had no idea that it would be such a hit.

Song also told the outlet that Franklin hoped the hat would eventually end up in the Barack Obama Presidential Library. He said that she “loved Obama, I know, and I personally couldn’t think of any better place for it.”

If Aretha and Barack both get their wishes, the hat may soon be on display at his library. Would you go and visit the library to see the hat? Let us know in the comments and be sure to pass this article along.
