Baby Girl Is Born 117 Days After Her Mother Was Declared Brain-Dead

117 days after her mother was tragically declared to be brain dead, a very healthy baby girl was born. Weighing just 4 pounds and 11 ounces, this 16.5 inch long baby girl was tiny. She was born on August 15, 2019 at the University Hospital located in Brno, Czech Republic.

This was a case that was not only unique and incredible to the Czech Republic, but also to the rest of the world as well.

At just 15 weeks pregnant, the baby’s mother suffered a severe stroke a few months previous. She was unconscious when she was rushed to the hospital. The woman was only 27-years-old. She was declared brain dead just after her arrival according to Inside Edition.

She had been in good health before she had the stroke. The quick actions of the medical staff and doctors made it possible to allow the fetus to continue to grow and develop. The stroke did not seem to have affected the baby.

The doctors put the mother on artificial life support in order to keep the baby growing inside the womb. They simulated walking by moving the woman’s legs so that the baby would grow healthily.

They gave the mother regular ultrasounds which were filmed and later released by the hospital. The staff can be seen in these videos gently touching the mother’s stomach and even putting toys on it.

While they weren’t able to keep the baby in the womb for full term, they were able to keep the baby in for 117 days. They delivered the baby via Ceasarean section at 34 weeks gestation.

After the baby was born, they disconnected the life support on the mother. She was surrounded by family, which included her husband, as she passed away.

"This has really been an extraordinary case when the whole family stood together ... without their support and their interest it would never have finished this way," said the head of obstetrics and gynecology, Pavel Ventruba to Reuters' reporters. 

Just a few years ago in 2017, a mother in Brazil, who was also brain dead, was kept alive for 123 days in order to give birth to twins according to Inside Edition.
