‘Average-Looking’ Woman With ‘Insanely Hot’ Husband Was Told He’s ‘Doing Charity Work’ For Marrying Her

Hazel McBride, a 29-year-old author and podcast host from Scotland, shared her experience in a TikTok video by playfully referring to herself as "average-looking" while dubbing her Dutch-born husband, Paul Barez, as "insanely hot." The video, uploaded in February 2022, quickly went viral with over 7,000 comments within the first hours, amassing millions of views and triggering a passionate discussion on body positivity, self-confidence and the true essence of love. 

The short clip showcased McBride and Barez braving the cold weather, bundled up and sharing a loving gaze. McBride's intention was to question societal expectations by asking her followers, "When are we gonna see insanely hot men with average-looking women?" 

However, her light-hearted approach ignited a heated debate on social media. One troll wrote in the comments that Barez was simply "doing charity work" when he chose to marry McBride. But some TikTokers also expressed their admiration for the couple's energy and relationship, with many dismissing the notion that McBride was "average-looking." 

In April 2022, McBride wrote via The Sun that she first met Barez in the Canary Islands in 2016 and instantly thought he could be a total player because of his good looks. On their very first date, McBride was "totally smitten" upon realizing that this handsome man was "kind, caring and really shy.” After publicly declaring their relationship, McBride said she was trolled online for nabbing a hot guy with her average looks. 

McBride also wrote that she was well aware that her husband is a 10. Her TikTok videos are part of a growing trend where individuals, particularly women, celebrate their relationships with partners deemed more attractive by societal standards. The trend serves as a powerful platform for challenging beauty norms and encouraging self-confidence, emphasizing that love knows no bounds.

Despite the varying opinions, McBride stood firm in her belief in the strength of her relationship with Barez and her self-assuredness. 

"Nope! I am so secure in our relationship and in myself,” she told one commenter who asked if she felt self-conscious. She even playfully bantered with a commenter, suggesting that her personality was the reason her husband fell in love with her.

“Maybe because his personality is *average* and mine is *banging*,” she said.

McBride's followers also commended her for her beauty and self-confidence but also questioned why she had to put herself down. However, others agreed that her husband was indeed more conventionally attractive.

While some criticized McBride for "fishing for compliments," others defended her by highlighting the double standard often faced by women in similar situations. They also noted that when men self-deprecate and describe themselves as "average," it is often perceived as being humble or funny, whereas women are criticized for seeking validation.
