Born into poverty in Naples, Loren's ascent to Hollywood stardom reads like a fairy tale. Loren was married to film producer Carlo Ponti for 41 years and described their relationship as "love at first sight." She met him when she was 15 years old while he was 37 years old. Their union bore two sons, Carlo Jr. and Edoardo Ponti. Carlo died in 2007.

Inside the tranquil confines of her residence near Lake Geneva, Switzerland, Loren experienced a fall in her bathroom, which caused her to break her hip and femur.  The news sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with fans and colleagues sending prayers and well-wishes for the beloved actress.

Immediate medical attention was sought, and Loren underwent emergency surgery to address the fractures. Her agent, Andrea Giusti, provided an update to the media, confirming the success of the procedure. The medical team attending to Loren worked diligently to ensure her swift recovery, and the initial reports post-surgery have been positive.

Before the accident, Loren, who celebrated her 89th birthday on Sept. 20, 2023, was seen at the Armani fashion show during the 80th Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 2, 2023. She appeared lively and was the center of attention, with many excited to see her.

Loren was also scheduled to grace the grand opening of a restaurant named after her in the Italian city of Bari. The event was also meant to honor Loren with honorary citizenship in the city. However, these were canceled in the light of her fall.

On Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023, Loren was well enough to release a statement.

"I thank everyone for the closeness and affection that they are showing me. I am better, just have to do rehabilitation and give myself a period of rest," the actress said

Throughout this ordeal, Loren's family has been her pillar of strength. Her sons, Carlo Jr. and Edoardo, who are now both in their 50s, have remained steadfastly by her side, offering emotional support and comfort. Their presence has undoubtedly been a source of solace for Loren during these trying times.

On Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, Giusti told People that Loren's recovery is "going well," but she will still need "a few months of rehabilitation."
