At 58, Teri Hatcher Leads Fulfilled Life As A Single Mom After Overcoming Passionless Marriages

Teri Hatcher, the "Desperate Housewives" star, has been single for a long time, but she's more fulfilled in her life without a partner after two divorces. One of her marriages even lacked physical intimacy and passion though the union produced her one and only child, Emerson Rose Tenney, born in 1997.

Hatcher was still a young and struggling actress when she got married to her first husband, Marcus Leithold, from 1988 to 1989. Not much has been reported about this relationship, but Leithold apparently worked as a personal trainer.

The actress then met Jon Tenney on a blind date in 1993 while she was working on the TV series "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." Their daughter was born three years after they got hitched in 1994, but the marriage crumbled in 2003 when she filed for divorce.

Hatcher revealed in "Burnt Toast," her memoir published in 2006, that her nine-year marriage to Tenney didn't have physical intimacy. She knew precisely when Emerson was conceived because it was the only time she was intimate with Tenney that year. She also confessed that her relationship with Tenney was based on friendship and not love or romance.

Following their divorce, Hatcher and Tenney fought over Emerson's custody. The child was 5 years old when her parents' marriage broke up, but they continued to battle in court until she became a teenager.

After Tenney, Hatcher was rumored to have dated George Clooney in 2006 after they were seen dining out together, but both denied there was something romantic going on. That same year, the actress also went on dates with Ryan Seacrest three times, but he disclosed that he had issues and not Hatcher, so nothing came out of the relationship.

In 2019, Hatcher told People she was in a good place despite being single "for a very long time." She chose not to remarry but then feels empowered about being able to make her own money, travel and be proud of her life even as she's not part of a pair.

“There is a difference between being lonely and being alone,” Hatcher said. "There is nothing lonely about my life. I want to remove the stigma of that.”

In 2022, Hatcher confessed that she tried to have a second child by herself when she was in her 40s using a sperm donor, but she suffered a miscarriage. Making light of her experience, Hatcher said the process of picking out a sperm donor was fun and intriguing and that single women can do it this way.

"You pick out literally, 'Do they wear glasses? Did they have acne? How tall?' Hatcher told E! News. "It's very interesting when you think about it that way."

Now that Emerson is an adult in her mid-20s and has her own independence, Hatcher feels elated that her daughter still prefers to spend time with her. On Instagram, the actress often shares photos of her trips and activities with Emerson, who also works in the industry as her parents as a voice actor and production coordinator.

However, Tenney is also close to her father, who remarried film producer Leslie Urdang in 2012. Emerson grew up dividing her time between both parents, especially during her school breaks. Tenney would also occasionally post photos of his daughter on his Twitter.
