At 54, Jennifer Lopez Was Called ‘Too Old’ For Wearing A Show-Stopping See-Through Gown That Took 800 Hours To Make

Jennifer Lopez is one of the most recognizable faces in entertainment right now—and what a face it is. The actress, singer, and dancer has often been praised for how good she looks for her age, but don’t try that backhanded compliment on her. She’s not likely to take it sitting down.

Born in 1969 in the Bronx borough of New York City, Lopez stole the nation’s hearts with her performance in the 1997 hit biopic “Selena” and hasn’t stopped since. Now in her mid-50s, Lopez is arguably one of the most influential Latin performers in the world. Her movies have grossed over $3 billion, and she has sold around 80 million copies of her musical recordings worldwide.

Lopez’s versatile career in the entertainment industry is as iconic as her timeless beauty. The actress, singer, and dancer has always attracted attention thanks to her sophisticated, young-looking appearance. Lopez has starred in several fabulous movies like “Maid in Manhattan” and “Marry Me” and also has several well-known songs like “All I Have” and “I’m Real,” to mention but a few.

At 54, Lopez was chosen by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour to co-chair the 2024 MET Gala along with actress Zendaya, Latin pop star Bad Bunny, and actor Chris Hemsworth. Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew were the honorary chairs.

With the theme of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” Vogue Editor Wintour decided that the dress code was “The Garden in Time,” inspired by a short story by renowned English novelist JG Ballard

Despite her radiant appearance at the MET Gala, Lopez faced criticism for her outfit, hair, and makeup. Some suggested she was “too old” to dress in such a manner.

Lopez co-hosted the 2024 MET Gala on May 6, 2024, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The annual fashion event celebrated the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring exhibition, which centers around 50 historically significant fashion pieces far too fragile to be worn again.

Ravishing as ever, Lopez arrived earlier than any other artists and celebrities invited to the fashion event. She wowed everyone with her near-see-through Schiaparelli couture gown. It was decked with stone embellishments that accentuated her beautiful physique.

Fashion designer Mariel Haenn explained that Lopez’s gown took 800 hours to make, and they used over 2,500,000 silver foil bugle beads to finish the dress.

“Much more than flowers, the butterfly symbolizes metamorphosis. Transformation. Something that was asleep that wakes up beautiful, powerful, and new. The butterfly is a perfect articulation of a sleeping beauty,” Haenn elaborated.

Stylist Lorenzo Martin balanced Lopez’s hair and makeup to a toned-down look to push more focus on the actual gown. The stylist used several products to give the singer-actress some hair texture and lock it all in place as she climbed the museum’s steps.

“The inspiration for this look was a butterfly transforming into something beautiful,” Lopez’s stylist told Vogue. “Just like a butterfly, we wanted the hair to be angelic, fresh, and beautiful.”

They also opted for a more neutral and effortless makeup look for Lopez. Her natural mocha beauty stood out with a mix of browns, pinks, and caramel eyeshadows.

Lopez completed the look with some Tiffany & Co. jewels and nails by Tom Bachik.

“Like a butterfly transforming in a shimmery chrysalis, I encased Jen’s polished natural nail in a translucent pearl cocoon,” Bachik said on Instagram.

Although effort, time, and many resources were given to produce Lopez’s show-stopping outfit at the MET Gala, some people on social media didn’t seem to understand and appreciate her look at the star-studded fashion event.

“Lookin like Jenny did her own hair and makeup lookin tired and too old for see thru,” a user on Facebook commented

“The hair and makeup is terrible! She looks tired,” another said on Instagram, echoing other’s similar comments, “Why did no one on her team have the guts to tell her how bad the make-up was? As a makeup artist, all I can say to the person that applied this is we do not claim you!”

Some users thought Lopez had been wearing fairly similar outfits on many occasions.

“I feel like she always wears the same type of gown. Super sparkly, prom lookin, muted colors. It’s boring,” one pointed out

“She's beautiful but dress decent it's getting old and so is she, wonder what her kids will think when [they are] older,” another chastised

“She looks beautiful as always but I feel like her dress is like all the other dresses she has worn in her lifetime. I guess I want to see something unique and different at the Met Gala,” a fan wrote

After drawing flak for her makeup and gown, some were also irked by her hairstyle, referring to it as their “everyday mom bun.”

"It looks like she tossed up a messy bun after a day at the beach,” one said

Apart from the criticism she received from people on social media about her look at the MET Gala, many have noticed that Lopez’s husband, Ben Affleck, was noticeably absent on her big night.

People magazine reported a scheduling conflict between the two and that Affleck was in California shooting for “The Accountant 2.”
