More and more people, including celebrities, are embracing their natural gray hairs. Probably the most notable celebrity who has done so this year is Sharon Osbourne. The 68-year-old TV personality ditched her iconic dark burgundy tresses to rock her natural shade of white with the help of celebrity hair colorist, Jack Martin.

In an Instagram post, Martin explained that Osbourne had been having to dye her hair once a week to maintain her trademark red and that she wanted a change. Osbourne has always been recognized for her statement red hair and although the feedback she received for embracing her grays was generally positive, some thought that the full head of white made her look older. (But in October, Osbourne revealed that she has reverted to her original look.)

Martin is focused on making grey hair the new rage. He believes that by embracing it, we can also greatly boost our self-esteem. With just a short scroll-through on his Instagram page, it is clear why Martin insists on silver colors. Instead of having to go back to the salon for frequent touch-ups, clients will only need to visit the salon a few times each year. Looking at the photo he posts, we can see that he does almost any type of hairstyle from balayage to the quirky bob.

Martin is the same genius who transformed Jane Fonda with a brand new grey pixie cut for the Oscars this year. He posed for a picture with the 82-year-old actress after working on her hair for seven hours and posted it on his Instagram the day after she hosted the awards show.

Just recently, Martin revealed another celebrity whose hair he had the opportunity to transform: Andie MacDowell.

“I had the joy of turning the star @andiemacdowell hair to silver for her impending Christmas film #dashingindecember,” the colorist wrote in his Instagram post on Wednesday, December 9th. He added that the actress had “insisted that her photograph to [sic] be as consistent with reality as could reasonably be,” because she wanted to show people that silver hair can look great on women and not just on men.

Martin describes MacDowell as someone who is “wonderful, straightforward, unassuming, interesting, adorable” and that getting to work with her hair was an “extraordinary occasion.”

Previously, MacDowell’s signature brunette curls were constantly responsible for making her easily recognizable. In 2019, Vogue magazine reported that it was MacDowell’s hair that stole the spotlight at the amfAR Gala in Cannes, and not her “glowing skin and toned arms,” two of her features that MacDowell had asked photographers to do double-takes on. Vogue added that her “raven mane,” was the focus in every photo it appeared in at the film festival.

‘Silver fox’ is usually a term to denote an attractive man with gray or graying hair. In a comment she wrote on Martin’s post, MacDowell reiterated her goal of showing people that women, too, can look just as charming with gray tresses with a story about what she saw when she went grocery shopping.

“I went to the grocery store right after getting my hair colored,” she wrote. “Walking through the store with my new hair I saw a very distinguished and very sexy silver headed man! Silver 🦊 I smiled at him and thought to myself, ‘I’m just like you comfortable in my skin and feeling fabulous.’

In a separate comment, MacDowell said that society can be more harsh on women when it comes to their appearances and that it’s “hard to change unrealistic expectations of women.” The Groundhog Day star continued, “How old am I supposed to look? Do I need to be ashamed that I’m not young? May I be proud of this time in my life. #dignity #noshame

MacDowell turned 62 in April. The mom-of-three told Entertainment Tonight in an interview that her gray hairs started sprouting during the time she spent quarantining at home this year. Her children encouraged her to rock the look. “It’s a time I want to experience with joy!” she wrote on Instagram, adding that she can always choose to color her hair again.

Last month, MacDowell showed exactly the joy she felt in a short clip of herself: “Good hair day, so I’m making a little video. Vanity video… for Instagram!” she said.
