An American flag manufacturing facility in Florida uses traditional techniques to create flags that will lay over the caskets at the funerals of military service members. These flags are important to the families of fallen military as they help honor their loved ones.

The facility in Florida makes about 350 flags a day which totals to around 70,000 flags a year according to a report by CBS Miami News. An employee of the facility told the news outlet, “Everyone is assigned a job, and we start with a roll of fabric that gets cut up into the stripes and you’ll see how the stripes are sewn together and then we add a star field and we add grommets and finishing.”

The machines the facility uses are traditional sewing machines that look like they are straight out of the industrial revolution. They are the oldest of their kind in the southeast U.S. first created in 1924. The employees find it fascinating to watch the sewing machines work because it is like watching a piece of history. The flags are 100% cotton and embroidered with the highest quality cloth.

“It’s an important department because many times people come to us seeking their own independence through jobs and they wind up working on the country’s biggest symbol of independence which is the flag,” an employee who works at the facility said adding, “they’re very proud and they’re very honored to have a hand in making the symbol that represents independence while they're here receiving services that give them an opportunity for a better life as well.”
