Alelia Murphy from Harlem, NY, died yesterday at the age of 114.

When the super-centenarian was born, Theodore Rousevelt was still President, Albert Einstein had just proposed his theory for relativity and the average American life expectancy was 47 years.

Murphy’s death was announced by 1199SEIU Caregivers on twitter yesterday.

“It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Mrs. Aleila Murphy,” they wrote. “Mrs. Murphy was the oldest living American, having celebrated her 114th birthday in July, surrounded by her family, friends, community leaders, & members of our AFRAM Caucus.”

According to the Daily Mail, her granddaughter Nefer Nekhet credited Murphy’s long life to moderation, eating two vegetables every evening and avoiding alcohol.

Alelia Murphy was born in North Carolina in 1905 and is one of 12 siblings. She moved to New York in the 1920s, where she lived until her passing.

She was believed to be the fifth oldest living person in the world at the time of her death and the oldest person in America.
Currently, the oldest person in the world is Kane Tanaka from Japan at 116 years old. The oldest person in the world is said to have been Jeanne Calment, who died at 122 years of age in 1997.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Murphy family. Do you know any supercentenarians? Let us know in the comments - and make sure you pass this along to your friends and family!
