The Aloe vera plant is where Aloe vera juice comes from. To get the juice out of the leaf, you need to grind it, crush it and blend it. Finally, you have to filter it so you can consume its nutrition packed goodness.

Now, you may find the smell of the Aloe vera plant quite striking. The good news is that the juice is actually mild in flavor and smell. That's one reason why it has become so popular as a healthy drink or supplement.

1. Healthier Blood Cholesterol Levels

One study found that animals given Aloe vera juice had a reduction of cholesterol by as much as 40 percent. Long-term use of the juice seems to lower blood cholesterol, triglycerides, and hepatic cholesterol levels.

It seems a soluble fiber found in Aloe vera juice actually binds with cholesterol and helps transport it out of the body. This is great news for anyone dealing with high cholesterol or cardiovascular problems.

2. Better Skin Health

The juice of the Aloe vera plant is neutral, meaning it's not acidic or sugary. This helps preserve your oral health. The juice also has anti-bacterial properties which help keep oral bacteria in balance.

Regularly washing the mouth in Aloe vera juice also helps reduce the development of mouth ulcers. Take a mouthful of juice and swish it around for a minute or two. Then swallow.

The nutrients packed into an Aloe vera plant helps protect the heart in several ways. For example, it helps boost circulation which reduces the blood's cholesterol levels while it prevents blood clotting.

Its heart health benefits are especially important for people dealing with heart-related conditions such as atherosclerosis or diabetes.

The Recipe

To create your own Aloe vera juice, you will need the following:

  • 3 cups of plain water
  • 1 large Aloe vera leaf, cut fresh from the plant
  • A blender
  • A sharp knife
  • A small bowl
  • A spoon

  1. Peel the outer layer of the leaf using a sharp knife. You are looking to expose the yellow layer residing just below the surface.
  2. Cut through this yellow layer and use a spoon to scoop out the Aloe vera gel in the inner core.
  3. Place the gel in the bowl. Take out any remnants of the yellow layer as these can cause bowel issues.
  4. Measure out 2 tablespoons of the Aloe gel and place it in a blender.
  5. Add water to the gel. Blend for 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. Serve the juice in a glass.

If you want additional flavor, add a bit of lemon or ginger to the juice. It's best to dilute the Aloe vera juice in water or mix it with another type of juice to give it flavor. You can drink it as is, but it can have a strong laxative effect.

Before you start drinking Aloe vera juice regularly, talk with your doctor about it.
