Amid the prevailing trend of audience members hurling objects or hurting performers during their shows, the young son of Alicia Keys decided to take action to protect his mom. Genesis, 8 years old, emerged as an unexpected guardian angel during Keys' concert in July 2023, as the boy stepped onto the stage to shield his mother from potentially unruly concertgoers.
Swizz Beatz, Keys' husband and the father of Genesis, took to Instagram to share the heartwarming moment between mother and son. Genesis was captured by his dad on camera as he stood boldly in front of his mother. The boy showed his unwavering commitment to safeguarding her during the performance as he watched over the people.
Music producer Swizz Beatz could not help but be proud of his son as he took his role as his mother's protector seriously. The father said that his son was not playing games when it came to Keys' presence on the stage.
It came as the entertainment world grappled with the challenges posed by audience misconduct. In July 2023, Bryan Adams had an encounter with a fan who was displaying questionable behavior at his show. According to the Los Angeles Times, the man hurriedly approached the stage and positioned himself in front of Adams, seizing the microphone and singing "Summer of '69" while the singer signaled for security.
In June 2023, P!nk had to stop her performance after a man threw his mother's ashes onto the stage, per USA Today. In two separate concerts, a fan slapped Ava Max mid-performance while another audience member hit Bebe Rexha with a microphone. At a Las Vegas show, rapper Cardi B threw a microphone at a rowdy fan who tossed liquid at her.
Genesis, born in December 2014, is the second child of Keys and Swizz Beatz, after Egypt, who was born in 2010. The couple, who have been married since 2010, also co-parent Swizz Beatz’s three other children from a previous marriage.
The shift to motherhood significantly transformed Keys, leading her to prioritize her family's well-being over the whirlwind pace of her career. It’s no wonder her kids are also devoted to her.
“He a real serious one,” Swizz Beatz said of his son’s choice to guard Keys on stage. “Thank you Gen we love you and your protection. He didn’t care she was live on stage.”
In another incident with his mom, Genesis outwardly told Keys that he didn't like what she was wearing for her show. According to People, the performer had on a short, see-through shirt with buttons, and the one thing shielding her chest was a heart-shaped cover. The boy asked if everyone could see her chest and worried about a possible wardrobe malfunction. However, Keys assured him that her outfit was fine and the audience could only "see a heart" on her shirt.
Keys showed Genesis a part of her dance routine where her chest moved a bit. Genesis then gave her some ideas. Instead of lifting her arms over her head, he suggested she do squats, clap, and then jump back up.
Meanwhile, Keys and Swizz Beatz said during a guest appearance on Jennifer Hudson's show that they don't pressure their kids to follow in the same path and become musicians.
“As long as you have a good intention on what you’re doing, we’ll support it," Swizz Beatz said. “We have to let the kids be who they’re going to be but guide them in the right way and not put that pressure on them.”
