After Chihuahua Mom With Huge Belly Goes Into Labor, Baffled Vets Witness A Record

When you think about the average size of an adult Chihuahua, you might consider a litter of two or three puppies to be the norm. In fact, with a breed that matures at a typical weight of less than five pounds, a litter of four puppies seems astounding.

Yet Coco, the little tan Chihuahua belonging to Dawn and Bill Slater, would give birth to a litter of ten puppies and earn herself a place in the Book of Guinness World Records for the largest litter on record born to this petite breed of dog.

When the Slaters realized their canine companion was going to be a mother, they brought her into the vet for multiple prenatal check-ups. Finally, the vet confirmed a healthy litter of five puppies was on its way.

Yet the Slaters would be shocked and astounded once Coco’s labor began.

The first five babies were born and then the brave little dog’s labor continued. An additional sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth puppy was finally born to an exhausted Coco.

The ninth puppy required intervention by the Slaters as he was hard to revive at birth, yet all of Coco’s puppies survived. With such a large litter, however, the Slaters knew they would be needed if the puppies were going to make it through the first precarious weeks of life.

Therefore devoting their time to their dog and her newborns, the Slaters took turns staying with Coco and sleeping on their off hours.

Since dogs only have eight nipples, a rotation schedule was implemented to ensure the runts received as much time nursing as the bigger pups. Their plan was a success and Coco’s litter will soon be looking for new homes as ten puppies are too many to add to the Slater’s multi-pet household.
