Back in 2016, Bear the pitbull wandered from his fenced-in yard with his sisters and was struck by a car. The dastardly driver sped away leaving Bear severely injured. Luckily, the accident happened near a service station and a bystander rushed Bear to an emergency vet. It was clear early on that Bear would lose one eye as it appeared to be leaking out of the poor dog's head. Upon seeing the severity of Bear's injuries, his owner promptly surrendered custody of him. According to Inquirer, Katie Frame's mother worked at the vet's office and asked Katie what she thought about having a blind dog.
Katie assumed quite correctly that it would be similar to having a dog with full sight. A pit bull rescue group offered to pay for Bear's necessary surgeries if he had a home to go to afterward. So, Katie and her mom officially adopted Bear.

Within the first two weeks, Bear had to have two additional surgeries, and he eventually lost his other eye. Now completely blind and living in new surroundings, Bear had to find his way. Katie told The Dodo:
"He bumps into things sometimes, but he eventually mapped out the house in his head and he gets around easier than I thought he would."
Realizing that she had never considered adopting a blind or otherwise handicapped dog prior to meeting Bear, Katie wanted to raise awareness about dogs like Bear. Katie began to come out of her own shell and started an Instagram account to help educate others about dogs with disabilities.
Katie says "Living with a blind dog is not so different from living with a regular dog,"
Katie told the Inquirer that Bear changed her life for the better by helping her get out of her shell:
“When I got him, I was in middle school. I was very insecure and had social anxiety,” said Katie. “But once I got Bear, I started talking to everyone. He taught me how to interact with all the strangers he naturally draws to me.”
