Adopted Son And His Biological Mother Reunite After 20 Years & Learn They Work In The Same Building Together

According to the Adoption Network, nearly 2% to 4% of people are officially adopted. For one young man, he knew he was adopted from a young age. One day and with the click of a button, a man from Utah was reunited with his biological mother. Benjamin Hulleberg was adopted by his parents, Angela and Brian Hulleberg, in November 2001. His biological mother, Holly Shearer, was a young teen when she gave Benjamin up for adoption on Thanksgiving Day.

During the first few years of Benjamin’s life, his parents sent Shearer pictures and updates of Benjamin. However, after the Hulleberg’s adoption agency closed, Shearer never heard from the family again. It wasn’t until years later that Benjamin would finally connect with Shearer after years of trying. According to Good Morning America, the Hulleberg family helped their son search for his biological mother for quite some time before they actually found one another. Benjamin attempted to find her by writing letters, signing up for an adoption agency, and doing DNA testing.

Not only was Benjamin trying to find Shearer, but she had thought about the son she gave up for adoption nearly every day since. On Benjamin’s 20th birthday, his biological mother decided to reach out by reaching out to him on Facebook. After some emotional correspondence, the two decided to move their communication from online to real life. Nearly 48 hours after the two first connected, they would meet for dinner for a touching reunion. Not only did the biological mother and son meet for dinner for three hours, they realized they had been closer than expected for many years.

In an exclusive interview with Good Morning America in May of 2022, Shearer shared that she had never stopped thinking about the adoption. “He was always on my mind. More so on holidays and his birthday, roller coaster of emotions,” she said. “I thought about him all the time,” she added.

She admitted that she had wanted to reach out earlier but hesitated. “He was 18 when I found him and I was very hesitant,” she said. “The last thing I wanted to do is to throw a wrench in his life. So I just watched from a distance.”

Benjamin remembered the moment he received the message.

“I can remember the exact place that I was at when I got the message. I was at work,” Benjamin said.

“I was crying. It was all very positive emotions,” he said. "But to me, this is a day I had been waiting for the past 20 years of my life and to imagine that it was finally happening was outrageous. It was a lot to take in."

The two met on Nov. 21, 2021, at Red Robin, where they had dinner for three hours. They found out that they had been working in the same building for two years!

"Every morning, I would come in through the women's pavilion to come into work. So I passed right by the NICU every single day. We parked in the same garage, could have been on the same floor, had no idea that we were so close," Shearer said.

Benjamin admitted, “I would definitely say it was a dream come true. I've said that about things in my life, like ‘Oh, I'm so glad I graduated. It's a dream come true.’ But this? This was the most true time I've ever said it.”
