Despite placing second on “American Idol” Season 7, Adam Lambert became one of the most successful talents that the reality-singing competition has ever produced. Next to Jennifer Hudson, Jessica Sanchez, David Archuleta, Katherine McPhee and many other “Idol” runners-up, Lambert has cemented himself as a “could have been winner” for a majority of people in the country and in the world, as he has proven himself commercially outside of the competition.
In the same year after placing second on “American Idol,” Lambert released his debut album, “For Your Entertainment,” which shot to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. His single, “Whataya Want from Me,” became one of his most popular songs. It even earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Album.
He followed up his debut album with a second studio record titled "Trespassing," which was released in 2012. It premiered on the Billboard 200 at number one and made history with Lambert being the first openly gay musician to top the album charts. In 2015, he released his third album titled "The Original High," which debuted on the Billboard 200 at number three.
In an episode of NBC’s “That’s My Jam,” the singer, along with actor Simu Liu and sister duo Chloe and Halle Bailey, swept the floor with his stunning rendition of a traditional nursery rhyme. To sing using his own voice would surely be a treat already, but to hear and see him perform the heck out of it by emulating Cher’s voice? It was definitely a performance not to be missed by anyone!
Interestingly, that was not the first time that Lambert channeled the Goddess of Pop in him, as he had made Cher proud before. Read on to learn more about Cher and Lambert’s interaction before and more about his hilarious performance!

On top of his stellar music career, Lambert was recruited by the rock band Queen as their lead vocalist for Queen + Adam Lambert. The rave reviews and comparisons to the iconic Freddie Mercury inspired the band to invite Lambert on board full-time. He toured with the famous band from 2014 to 2022, even producing their own album, “Live Around the World.”
As if being Queen’s temporary vocalist wasn’t a huge deal, Lambert had his full circle moment when he was chosen to honor Cher at the 41st Kennedy Center Honors in 2018. A video of Lambert's performance from that night has since made its way onto the internet, and not only does the public get to witness his incredible rendition, but it also showed Cher's reaction to the beautiful cover of her hit song.
As the video began, Lambert walked onto the stage and began singing the opening lines of "Believe" accompanied only by a soft piano. His version of the song is much slower, making for a more emotional rendition.
Shots of the audience throughout the video confirmed just how magical Lambert's rendition was, with many bobbing their heads and some even singing along. But it's when the camera landed on Cher that the full impact of the performance was felt. Smiling towards the end of the song, Cher began to wipe tears from her eyes.
At the end of the song, Cher and the rest of the auditorium even stood up to give Lambert the ovation he deserved.
Cher thanked Lambert on social media, trying to articulate the emotion she felt during the performance, as she said her senses were “overwhelmed,” and all she could feel was love.

Lambert, a prominent LGBTQ+ personality, holds Cher in high reverence as she was one of the first artists in the music industry who advocated and championed the rather marginalized community. Since then, artists have tried to honor her in one way or another in their own respective ways.
Some say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and NBC’s expanded version of “That’s My Jam” put Lambert to the test. He was tasked with channeling the Goddess of Pop while singing the traditional 1820 nursery rhyme “Muffin Man.”
Jimmy Fallon, the show’s host, was immediately thrilled after announcing Lambert’s upcoming performance.
“Do you have a Cher in you?” Fallon asked him, which prompted Lambert to imitate Cher by iconically throwing his hair back – which sent the whole room into a burst of laughter.
As he approached the mic, the band played the introduction part of Cher’s “Believe,” but the funky and upbeat version.
“Do you know the muffin man? Do you know the muffin man? The muffin man, the muffin man,” Lambert repeatedly sang to the tune of the iconic song.
Throughout the performance, Lambert effortlessly sang the nursery rhyme as if it came from Cher’s old records. Lambert got the crowd hyped up because of his on-point impression.
As he finished the number, Fallon only had one question: “How do you do that? How do you make that good? Cher would be very proud.”
Like his performance at the Kennedy Centers Honors, the whole place lit up in purple, signifying Cher’s colors. Same with the ending of “That’s My Jam,” the whole crowd bolted up on their seats, giving Lambert the well-deserved applause and standing ovation his hilarious performance required.
