Actress Gabrielle Union Comments On Claims Of Her 2-Year-Old Daughter’s Hair Being 'Never Done’

Gabrielle Union has proven to be a fierce woman in many aspects of her life. She’s been a staple in the acting industry for years for her roles in “Bring It On” and “Think Like A Man,” and has also shown off her skills as a writer and advocate for social issues. To top it off, Union is a stepmother for her husband’s three children, as well as a mother to their daughter together. While she’s been known for her fiery and feisty personality on-screen, this mother is just as determined to stand up against those hating on her daughter and her daughter’s appearance.
Union is married to former NBA player Dwayne Wade. During his 16-year career, Wade spent most of his time a member of the Miami Heat team. Together, Union and Wade make a pretty powerful and stunning duo, and their family is just as incredible. The couple got married on Aug. 30, 2014, in Miami, Florida, after dating for six years. Following this, Union became a stepmother to Wade’s three children, and in November 2018, the happy couple welcomed the birth of their daughter, Kaavia.
Being such prominent figures in the spotlight, it’s not surprising that the married couple enjoys sharing the occasional photograph on social media and giving their fans a peek into their lives. While many people have been nothing but kind to the family, some online haters have spoken out about Kaavia’s appearance, specifically her hair. Union, being the protective and attentive mother she is, has made sure to shut down the harsh commenters and defend her cute 2-year-old child.
Having a busy life can make it tough to keep up with everything going on in your life, and to make sure that everything is absolutely perfect. This is especially true for parents, even parents’ whose day-job is being a celebrity. For Union, this has been the case when it comes to keeping up with the way her daughter’s hair looks. She and her husband both lead hectic lives, and sometimes enjoy basking in the moments where they can relax and settle down together with their beautiful family. Union has been busy as an actress and launching her own beauty line, while Wade has purchased an ownership stake in the Utah Jazz franchise of the NBA, as per ESPN.
In February 2021, BET reported that there has been plenty of social media criticism regarding Kaavia’s hair and the messy nature it typically appears to be in. Union simply explained to MadameNoire that her daughter swims on the daily, and her hair just sometimes isn’t done up to look nice afterward, as per BET.
“Even when her hair is done in the morning, she swims,” Union said. “So it’s not going to be picture perfect or whatever people feel that means.” The actress went on to talk about how it’s normal for kids to play and not have their hair done perfectly every single day. “I’m human. I see comments where they’re like, ‘That child’s hair is never done.’ And it is done, I just don’t chase her around making sure that we document her looking super, super done every single day,” she said. “You’ll see her like that on occasion.”

The criticism may seem harsh as it is directed toward the way Union operates as a parent with her daughter, but it is even more frivolous when it comes to the fact that Union has her own hair care line, Flawless by Gabrielle Union, in partnership with Sally Beauty. The line offers products to help with general hair care, as well as specific products for hair protection and different hair types.
Her 14-year-old stepdaughter, Zaya, has become a big fan of being creative with her own hair. “She loves to color her hair,” Union said. “I’m just really trying to teach her the importance of taking care of your hair. You want to dye it? Cool. But you got to take care of it.” The successful woman went on to explain just what exactly people can do to help treat their hair properly. “You’ve got to moisturize it,” she said. “You’ve got to comb through it all. Every day! You’ve got to wrap it up. All of these things.”
Union has gotten used to working with stylists on production sets and learning what works best for her own hair. “They know my hair, they know what it takes to keep it healthy,” she said. “They know what can cause damage quickly. So we create rituals in the hair and makeup trailer.” Union explained that she treats her hair before and after work, and even steams it to make sure it’s as healthy as possible.
Ultimately, having freedom of expression is what’s important to Union and the way she helps her daughters conquer their hair dilemmas. The star explained that they should have “the freedom to just exist without having to think about their hair all the time.”
