A Massive 12-Meter Violin Boat Just Sailed Through The Canals Of Venice

It’s not every day that you see a huge violin in the beautiful canals of Venice, Italy, but that’s exactly what started happening in August 2021. The massive instrument is actually a boat built in the shape of a giant violin that has a message just as beautiful as its construction. The craftsmanship behind the boat is absolutely flawless and looks almost exactly like a real violin, aside from its astronomical shape and missing strings. Fortunately, music lovers were not disappointed as people were still able to hear beautiful music playing from the boat.

The work of art is called the “Violin of Noah” and was created by the artist Livio De Marchi in collaboration with the Venice Development Consortium. It had its first test voyage in August 2021 and was ready to fully set sail the following month for anyone near the canals of Venice to see and marvel in its beauty. It should be easy for sightseers to spot, as the boat is 12 meters — or 40 feet — in length and is accompanied by some incredibly talented musicians.

While the violin-shaped boat looks absolutely gorgeous, its meaning is even more heartwarming. The past couple of years have been difficult for people all over the world, and the boat was created as a way to honor those lost and to spread some light and positivity. The giant work of art has become a beacon of hope for the people of Italy but also for people around the world as they move forward in overcoming the hardships of the past.

Reuters reported that the violin-shaped boat created during the pandemic by De Marchi had its first test voyage on Aug. 6, 2021. The artist is known as the Carpenter of Venice and has produced many other floating sculptures just as stunning as his violin boat. WKRC reported that De Marchi has also crafted a vintage Volkswagen car, a paper hat and a giant boat in the shape of a high-heeled shoe. The violin-shaped boat was designed in a fashion that makes it easy to disassemble and rebuild as needed and is powered by an electric motor.

After doing well during its trial, the boat made its maiden voyage on Sept. 18, 2021, according to WKRC. During this voyage in Venice, a string quartet played while standing on the beautiful boat. It was built as a tribute to those who lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic and to anyone suffering from the hardships the pandemic has brought on. The boat is also meant to symbolize the rebirth of Venice following the challenges of the pandemic.

While floating down the Grand Canal, the string quartet atop of the violin-shaped boat played Vivaldi, according to VOA News. The male violinist was dressed in a suit but forewent his shoes, while the female musicians were dressed in beautiful, colorful evening gowns. Seeing the boat while hearing the enchanting music made the moment even more magical as people honored those that were lost during the past year. It was a touching experience for everyone that was able to witness the stunning work of art called the “Violin of Noah.”
