Potato salad: It's an American favorite. Most of us have eaten it–be it at family picnics, on a road trip, or on game day but not many of us have actually tried making their own. All that is about to change with this recipe we're about to share with you.
Here is what you'll need:
- 5 potatoes (medium) russet or red
- 8 eggs hard-boiled (save 2 eggs to use for garnish on salad)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1/2 cup sweet pickle relish or 5 to 6 diced baby dill pickles, if you don't like it sweet
- 1 tsp dill weed finely chopped
- Paprika (optional)
- Celery chopped (optional)
- Green onion or red onion, chopped (optional)
You may be wondering: why add sugar to a savory dish like potato salad? It does sound weird but adding small amounts of sugar to savory dishes is actually a common and clever practice. (The reverse works too, for example, adding salt to chocolate milk makes it 10 times tastier. Just try it if you don't believe us.)
Adding sugar to non-sweet dishes helps to balance out the flavor of the meal, especially salty and sour flavors. So just consider the sugar in this recipe like the counterweight to the sour cream, the mayo, and the salt that’s used in this recipe.
Once you have all the ingredients prepared, just simply follow the instructions in the video. Don't forget to show us your scrumptious creation in the comments.
